Protests may delay granting of license to greyhound track AUS TIN (AP) — The issuing of a lucrative greyhound wagering li cense for Galveston County, the sub ject of continuing controversy and protest, may be delayed, the Texas Racing Commission said Thursday. Bill Meincke, commission exec utive secretary, said a final order granting the gambling permit to Lone Star Greyhound Park Inc. likely would be held up pending an appeal by groups which lost the li censing competition. “Altnough the commission is not precluded from signing the final or der while the appeal is pending,” Meincke said, a nearing officer has recommended placing the appeal and final order on the agenda of the commission’s Oct. 9 meeting. The commission selected Lone Star Greyhound Park in July but it the li- delay to give investigators nioretimfj :ht hasn’t formally awarded cense. | Greyhound experts have said the Galveston County track could be come the biggest money-making dog track in the United States. Two weeks ago, commissioners ig nored the recommendation of their staff attorneys and refused to delay the final award to Lone Star, a group of Texas and Alabama investors that wants to build the track in La Mar que. Commission lawyers had urged a to check allegations that LoneSlaij had sabotaged a competitor’s ap cation. Last week, a rival group —Gate I ton Greyhound Racing Associate I — filed a motion to halt issuanceofl the final license order and to reopen I the hearing. Hearing officer Holly denied that motion Friday. On Mon ] day, Galveston Greyhound filed i appeal and requested that it be| placed on the agenda of the Rat Commission’s October meeting. Meincke said he would follow dial | recommendation. Shortly after the July hearinginl which Lone Star won the wagering I permit, Lone Star consultant Ard'I Blakley admitted that he funneledl money into a citizens group ini League City which opposed a com [ peting application for a track in tha l community. Blakley, of Texas City, also; mitted “having some general kno edge” of an incident in which adeacj Attwater’s prairie chicken waJ placed on the proposed League Cit'I track site. Investigators speculated that the endangered bird was I there in a bid to make it appear tliej site was a nesting place and thusun I suitable for a greyhound racing fa I cility. Since the amount requested of everyone is small, she said, everyone should be able to contribute. “People in the community have the chance to support a lot of causes, and Habitat doesn’t want to take away from that,” she said. “With ‘89 for ’89,’ it’s something maybe they can spare and still give to their favorite charity.” Burk said she realizes that not ev eryone in the community will give 89 cents, but she hopes that some orga nizations, companies and church groups will donate 89 cents per memoer. Habitat already has raised $11,000 in donations from individu als, and several businesses in town have offered to donate windows, carpet, cabinetry and plumbing serv ices when construction begins on the first house. Burk said many people have volunteered to help with the building, but funds are still needed. “We nave to make sure we have enough money before we select a family,” she said. “We don’t want to have to disappoint anyone.” Burk said the s received a number of calls from fan! ilies in need of housing. OnewomaJ called and said she has to move lit' bed every time it rains because he’ roof leaks, Burk said, while a sing mother with four children calle and said she lost her job.
