Book contest applications
must be turned in Friday
By Andrea Warrenburg
Of The Battalion Staff
Applications for the 17th annual Student Book Col
lectors’ Contest, sponsored by Friends of the Sterling C.
Evans Library, are due by 5 p.m. Friday.
“We want the contest to stimulate interest in books, in
collecting books and in the library,” Nancy Buchanan,
assistant instructional services librarian and chairman
of the Student Book Collectors committee, said.
To enter, students at the undergraduate or graduate
level must have an annotated bibliography of the titles
in their collection and write a brief statement about the
theme of their collection. Each collection must have ex
actly 25 titles owned by the student and must have a
theme.
“The more specific and cohesive the theme, the bet
ter,” Buchanan said.
Finalists will be asked to bring all 25 books to the li
brary for the final judging. The three judges will look
for a unifying theme and thoughtful choice in selec
tions.
The winners will receive one of seven cash awards
named after the individual or group who donated the
money. The first six awards are for $250 and the sev
enth award is a $50 honorable mention presented to an
undergraduate.
“It is an opportunity for students to do something
with their collection and be rewarded for it,” Buchanan
said.
Contest rules and entry forms are available at the li
brary reference desk. Winners will be notified before
the Oct. 13 awards ceremony.
Officials break up cocaine ring
in Corpus led by ‘Candyman’
CORPUS CHRISTI (AP) — A motel, 11 houses, six
cars and four bank accounts have been seized in the
breakup of what local and federal officials described as
a major cocaine ring led by a figure known as the “Can
dyman.”
Total value of the seizures was estimated at $250,000,
officials said.
Lester Johnson, 50, was arrested Tuesday on charges
that include conspiracy to distribute illegal drugs, run
ning a criminal enterprise and money laundering.
Johnson, according to a 17-count federal indictment,
is known on the city’s north side as the “Candyman.”
Much of the illegal activity, according to the indict
ment, took place over a period of nearly two years at the
Johnson’s Rooms motel, which was seized Tuesday.
“Part of the conspiracy was for certain members of
the conspiracy to bring clients for prostitution to the
Johnson’s Rooms motel,” the indictment stated. “Said
clients would there procure cocaine from other conspir
ators.”
Also named in the indictment was 30-year-old Carol
Tilley, who was arrested on charges of distribution of
cocaine and conspiracy to distribute the drug, said
Charles Evans, agent in charge of the Internal Revenue
Service’s criminal enforcement division.
The indictment added that Johnson and his accom
plices would “reside at and sell cocaine from rooms at
Johnson’s Rooms” and “use a pay telephone in the hall
way of the . . . motel to receive orders for cocaine from
potential consumers.”
The indictment said Johnson also purchased houses
for use as drug outlets.
Evans told the Corpus Christ! Caller-Times that
agents expect to arrest seven more people in the case.
Johnson and Tilley were held without bond, pending
a hearing on Friday.
The IRS worked with the Corpus Christi Police De
partment, Nueces County Sheriffs Department and
U.S. Marshal’s office in the operation for nearly two
years on the case, officials said.
Law officers say if the courts agree the property
seized was connected to the alleged cocaine ring, the
property could be forfeited to the government.

‘Buster’ Brown promises state war on drugs, crime
By Holly Becka
Of The Battalion Staff
State Sen. J.E. “Buster” Brown, R-
Lake Jackson, one of two candidates
for the Republican nomination for
attorney general of Texas, will focus
on the drug issue in Texas during
his campaign.
Brown, who recently announced
his candidacy, said during an inter
view Wednesday that his number
one priority will be the drug prob
lem in the state. Brown has been a
state senator since 1980 and is the,
current president pro-tem of the
Texas Senate.
He started his campaign for a
safer to Texas to send the message
that Texans want the state safe, he
said.
“When *you talk about issues that
face us, whether they’re economic or
environmental issues, I don’t think
anything is as immediate as the drug
problem or affects as many people,”
Brown said.
He said he was in the process of
putting together what he thought
should be the state’s role in fighting
drug traffic, which will work closely
with President George Bush’s fight
against drugs on the national level.
He said he would like to wait until
the plan is further along before he
released exactly what the project en
tails.
“I’m not ready to release that be
cause I’d like to do it all at one time,”
he said. “I will say that it’s going to
be more than just raising penalties.
We have almost exhausted that as a
remedy, although I vote for and
carry bills to enforce and have severe
punishment (for drug users and
dealers). But we’ve got to go beyond
that. We have to look at everything
the government’s doing to see if we
are encouraging or discouraging
drugs as a social habit.”
Brown said he wanted to work
with the civil and criminal courts,
government agencies, schools and
universities to develop a program
that will “get serious about figq
the drug problem.”
Brown said he also wants ton
to give law enforcement officialsi]
judiciary members better tools]

crime detection.

Bush considers Rice as site for world summit
HOUSTON (AP) — If Houston is chosen as the site
of the 1990 Economic Summit, Rice University will
probably host the gathering of leaders from seven
countries, officials said.
The university’s “European ambiance” put it above
the other local sites considered to host the summit, Lee
Hogan, president of the Greater Houston Partnership,
said.
Hogan, who traveled to Washington last week, said
the Rice site “received encouraging response from the
White House” during his trip and in phone conversa
tions since his return. He did not specify who voiced
support for the Rice site.
President Bush once served as a visiting professor at •
the private university.
Several Texas cities, including San Antonio, Dallas
and Fort Worth, are vying for the summit, which bnj
together leaders of the United States, Great BriE
France, West Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada./]
cials expect a decision by Oct. 15, possibly sooner !
gan said Tuesday.
The timing of the summit could coincide with a
break between spring and summer semesters at Ricei

summit participants and the news media, officialssail
Hogan said Houston is a strong candidate to host]
summit if the president chooses a major metfopolil
area.
Hogan indicated that President Bush hasnotdei
