Basil “Stu” Baker, a presidential appointee, apparently has issued himself the luxury automobile and is using it to drive to and from work, sources within the marshal’s service told the Houston Chronicle. The 1988 gold-trimmed Mer cedes, which is fully loaded and equipped with a cellular telephone, is owned by the federal Drug En forcement Administration and is on loan to the marshal’s service. Jim Griffith, an official with the seized asset division of the U.S. Marshal’s Service, said he was not aware that Baker was driving such a car and did not know if the marshal had received the proper approvals. Baker’s use of the Mercedes may be a violation of federal policy. Griffith said such luxury auto mobiles are not intended for use by administrators. Judge trades gavel for anchor chair DALLAS (AP) — A judge who is about to swap the bench for the bright lights of television news says there is not much difference be tween the two careers. “A judge works to get the facts concerning a situation and puts them together in the form of a ver dict and delivers it to an audience — the jury,” said Dallas District Judge Catherine Crier, who will turn in her gavel next month to become a Cable News Network anchor. “I would say the parallels are con siderable.” The 34-year-old judge, the youngest woman ever elected to the Texas bench, is known in court house circles for her demeanor. ‘Lonesome Dove’ snub at Emmys raises furor DALLAS (AP) — Stampeded. Plucked. Left in the Dust. The angry headlines in Texas newspapers Monday said it all. The CBS miniseries, “Lonesome Dove,” a saga of western frontier life, got barely a nod from the tele vision industry in Sunday’s Emmy Awards and Texans weren’t happy about it. Helen Human, the Dallas actress who portrayed the bossy and buxom “Peach” in the miniseries, said, “It’s something that you can’t help feel ing bitter or upset about.” The epic depicts a cattle drive from dusty Lonesome Dove, Texas, to Montana. It’s central characters were two aging Texas Rangers por trayed by Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones. “I just wish the people who were more vitally involved with it got the recognition they needed to get,” Hu man said. “It kind of gives me the impression that somebody woke up with a sore tooth when they voted — that’s how ridiculous it is.” Sore heads might have been in volved, too. Human said. “Mr. Duval is a very talented per son, but he’s also a very strong per- Many industry watchers thought Duvall had a virtual lock on a best ac tor Emmy for his portrayal of the talkative Texas Ranger Gus. The pro gram won awards for casting, cos tumes, editing, makeup and sound and recognized director Simon Wincer. Other programs walked away with the big awards, to the astonishment of many. “Lonesome Dove” had topped the nominations with 18. “Considering the number of tapes we receive, when I open the box I expect to see someone I don’t want to hire,” said Paul Amos, CNN exec utive vice president of program ming. “And the fact that she didn’t have any news experience didn’t help. But when I saw the tape I real- izea Judge Crier had real potential.” Some district court coll support her career change. “I was totally unprepared! that she was entering a careei electronic journalism,” said Harold Entz. “But I think hero: opportunity is very exciting, a look forward to following her a’ with CNN.” Seminar gives student interviewing experienti By Julie Myers Of The Battalion Staff About 250 graduating seniors are better prepared to land their first job after attending “Career Workshop: Interviews and Resu mes” Sept. 9 in the Clayton Williams Alumni Center.
