Aggies shock Tigers 28-16
R.C. Slocum finally gets A&M to 1-0
By Richard Tijerina
Of The Battalion Staff
The first mistake Louisiana State
made Saturday night against Texas
A&M was deciding to kick to the Ag
gies after winning the coin toss.
It wasn’t their last.
Larry Horton, a former running
back wno was converted this year to
a free safety, returned the opening
kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown,
and the Aggies never looked back as
they upset seventh-ranked LSU 28-
16 before a home crowd of 61,633 in
their season opener.
It was the Aggies’ first opening-
season win since A&M defeated the
University of Texas-El Paso 20-17 in
1984. It was also new Head Coach
R.C. Slocum’s first official win as a
college coach.
The Aggies gave him that win in
grand fashion, as they answered sev
eral nagging questions about them
selves turning in outstanding offen
sive and defensive performances.
The game, which was televised na
tionally by ESPN, was the perfect
setting to serve as a springboard for
three players’ Heisman Trophy
hopes. All-Southeastern Conference
LSU quarterback Tommy Hodson
and running back Harvey Williams
had outside shots at the award. Sub-
E ar performances by both virtually
ave eliminated their chances.
A&M’s Heisman hope, junior
running back Darren Lewis, wasted
the first of two consecutive nation
ally-televised games with an unusu
ally ineffective showing. Lewis, the
nation’s top-returning ground
gainer from last year, finished with
55 yards on 17 rushes.
The real star of the Aggies’ offen
sive show was sophomore fullback
Robert Wilson, who rolled and ram
bled over LSU defenders all night
for 121 yards on 15 carries. Wilson,
last year’s Southwest Conference
Newcomer of the Year, was named
ESPN’s Player of the Game.
Offensive coordinator Bob Tole
do’s public debut of the Aggies’ re
vamped pass-oriented offense got
off to a good start, with junior Lance
Pavlas going the distance and play
ing consistently. Pavlas, who com
pleted eight of 11 attempts for 114
yards, appeared in control through
out the game.
“The offensive line did a great
job,” Pavlas said. “I had a lot of time
to throw and in our offensive
scheme there’s going to be guys
open. This is a sweet victory. This is
the kind of game that we can hold on
to and look back on for a long time.”
Indeed. LSU was considered one
of the toughest opponents A&M
would have to face all year, and beat
ing the Tigers at home for the first
time in three years was definitely
something to savor. In their last
three games, LSU had outscored
A&M 79-20.
Senior linebacker Aaron Wallace
said the Tigers had it coming.
“They (LSU) come over here and
they talk,” Wallace said. “They talk
every year — 35-6 I think it was this
year, and Harvey Williams this and
Harvey Williams that.”
Williams, who was a coveted blue-
chip running back from Hempstead
in 1986, spurned A&M recruiters
and signed with LSU. Since then it
has appeared he’s reserved his best
games for
