that u is. Let me say, though, that the
best flagships always have sturdy
cruisers moving around it to keep it
from sinking, and we’re there to
support the A&M System.”
Chancellor Perry Adkisson said
the merger gives the System an op
portunity to strengthen education in
engineering, science and math.
“This merger will strengthen the
education in those areas where we
have great expertise, in areas where
the country is desperately in need of
well-trained technical people for
staffing the high-tech industry,” Ad
kisson said.
“We’re already in the discussion
stage and shortly will be in the plan
ning stage for a major program to
strengthen the undergraduate edu
cation in science, engineering and
math.
“We believe we can bring in sub
stantial federal funding for a pro
gram, which will be a model pro
gram. We’ll have opportunities with
the merger we would not have had
before the merger.
“Now that we’re a space grant uni
versity we have to remember to keep
our eyes to the stars.”
Presidents of the south Texas uni
versities on Friday each named one
major strength their institution will
contribute to the A&M System.
Laredo State University President
Leo Sayavedra said LSU’s strenth
lies in the area of international
trade.
“You may or may not know that
we are the only institution in the
country that offers a master’s degree
in international trade, and we hope
that will enhance the System and at
the same time make it grow,” Saya
vedra said.
(Continued from page 1)
Corpus Christi State University
President Alan Sugg named the uni
versity’s nursing program as its
unique strength.
“You want me to name just one?”
Sugg asked. “In our nursing pro
gram, we award the largest number
of baccalaureate degrees of any uni
versity in south Texas, and also we
have a master’s program in nursing.
Both are fully accredited.”
Ibanez singled out Texas A&I’s
bilineual education program.
and can not smoke, but at least this
will force me to think about the non-
smokers around.”
Donalds said she’s had to cut
down her smoking already, but it
wasn’t because of the smoking poli
cy.It’s because the vending machines
with cigarettes in them around cam
pus have disappeared, along with
the cigarettes sold in the snack areas.
To further enforce the new pol
icy, A&M will no longer buy ciga
rettes for the machines or snack
bars.
The policy, which has been on the
drawing table for two years, was ori-
gionally an all-out ban on smoking
on the A&M campus approved by
the Faculty Senate in December of
1987. It recommended that smoking
be banned in all buildings on the
campus, including classrooms, dor
mitories, eating places, student and
faculty lounges, lavatories, hallways
and athletic facilities (including seat
ing areas in Kyle Field and Olsen
Field).

In February 1988, Faculty Sen
ator Dr. Benton Storey, professor of
horticultural sciences, told The Bat
talion that second-hand smoke “is a
problem in most buildings on cam
pus — including dormitories — be
cause of the way the ventilation sys
tems in most campus buildings are
.designed so that cigarette smoke is
■ not confined to ‘smoking areas’, but
is circulated throughout the entire
building.”
