New generation Cray supercomputer
soon to be installed, on-line at A&M
UNIVERSITY NEWS SERVICE
A computer that is the first model of its kind any
where — and among the fastest on the planet — will be
installed at Texas A&M University and ready for use by
Sept. 11.
The power of the University’s new Cray Y-MP 2/116
system is capable of producing more than 300 million
calculations per second, Dr. John Dinkel, associate pro
vost for computing and information systems, said.
Texas A&M’s new system is the first of a new genera
tion of such Cray supercomputers and will be the first
of this specific model to become operational anywhere
in the world, Dinkel said.
It is also among the first four Cray YMP systems to be
installed at universities in the United States, he added.
Formal dedication ceremonies are scheduled for
later this fall.
Texas A&M’s official entry into the realm of super
computing is expected to benefit almost every area of
scientific or technological research, Texas A&M Presi
dent Dr. William H. Mobley said.
Among studies expected to reap immediate benefitl
are research on nuclear phenomena, engineering del
sign problems, calculation of molecular dynamics anil
modeling of large-scale weather phenomena, he said.
Supercomputing capabilities are vital to centers prol
viding leadership positions in scientific research sudl
that which Texas A&M has carved out in the past twol
decades, the president explained.
“Such a resource is needed in order to maintain and
increase levels of research funding and to recruit and
retain they type of faculty, research staff and graduate
students who generate this funding,” Mobley said.
The Cray supercomputer will be accessible from any!
computer or work station attached to the extensive?
campuswide fiber optic network. In addition, remote
access will be possible.
