As you can probably tell by the story
line, “Licence To Kill” is an ex
tremely action-packed movie. But
what would any Bond film be with
out some gratuitous sex? This comes
in the form of Pam Bouvier, played
by Cary Lowell, and Lupe Lamora,
played by Talisa Soto. Granted,
these are both extremely beautiful
women, but their characters are one
dimensional and do little more than
clutter up the storyline. “Licence To
Kill” would have been a much better
film if these characters had been de-

I have a feeling that since the cre
ative team behind “Licence To Kill”
was trying to be faithful to the origi
nal Fleming novels, they attempted
to shy away from standard Bond
movie cliches. Unfortunately, be
cause audiences have come to expect
certain things from a Bond movie,
the creative team had to at least in
clude a few of them. Consequently,
the seduction scenes happen quickly
and for no apparent reason.

For example, after shooting up a
bar and then escaping in a boat, Pam
Bouvier suddenly gets all hot and
bothered. Considering that she had
known Bond barely 10 minutes at
this point, her actions don’t make a
whole lot of sense. Fortunately, this
scene is over with before you can
blink.
The TAMU Aggie Players will

In the new version of the play,
Simon has changed the principal
characters, Felix Ungar and Os

the poker party that opens the
original version, the new play be

Similarly, the seduction scenes
with Lupe Lamora are just as stupid
and are a definite low point in the
film.
Another Bond movie cliche that
happens for no apparent reason are
the wise-cracks.
Fleming’s Bond, as I mentioned
earlier, was deadly serious about all
things and hated killing anyone,
even if he had justification. At no
time would Bond kill a person and
then make a joke about it. His reac
tion would be more along the lines
of getting somber or angry.

The James Bond of the films,
however, wise-cracks about every
thing from killing people to seduc
ing women. Strangely enough, this
aspect seems to have come from a se
ries of books concerning an adven
turer named The Saint.
Written by Leslie Charteris, The
Saint was a English man who trav
eled the world, righting wrongs and
killing bad guys. He wore the finest
clothes, ate the finest foodi and
drank the finest wine. He also wise
cracked a lot. Sound familiar?
In “Licence To Kill,” Bond still
wise-cracks, but not very often or
very enthusiastically.
For the most part, “Licence To
Kill” is a good Bond film. It is more
realistic (except for an 18-wheeler
doing a wheelie) and very violent.
Bond fans will be pleased, especially
fans of the Fleming novels.
