The United States urged China to
spare the lives of the 11 demonstra

Liu Gang, 28, was apprehended
Monday in Hebei province just
south of Beijing, radio and televison
news reports said.
Gang was one of 21 students on a
wanted list the government issued
last week. They are accused of mas
terminding the seven weeks of dem
onstrations for greater freedom and
an end to official corruption.
So far, six of those students have
been arrested or have turned them
selves in. Authorities say they have
arrested more than 1,360 people for
participating in the democracy
movement.

The crackdown began the night
of June 3-4 when troops backed by

North juror
accused of lying
during selection
WASHINGTON (AP) — A
federal judge Tuesday postponed
the sentencing of Oliver North to
consider allegations that one of
the jurors who convicted the for
mer presidential aide lied during
jury selection.
U.S. District Judge Gerhard A.
Gesell ordered a June 28 hearing
on defense allegations that juror
Tara King had used drugs before
the trial and had failed during
jury selection to disclose that
three of her brothers had arrest
records.
Gesell released defense
pleadings about the allegation
that had been filed under court
seal.
They contained copies of Dis
trict of Columbia Superior Court
records indicating that one of
King’s brothers, Samuel King Jr.
had an arrest record, including a
1987 conviction for armed rob
bery.
Two other brothers were ar
rested on other charges but the
cases were dismissed. A sister was
involved in a child-custody suit
with her estranged husband,
according to court records pro
duced by the defense.
Before the trial, King indicated
on a questionnaire for prospec
tive jurors that no member of her
family had ever been involved in
a criminal or civil case, either as a
witness or as the subject of an in
vestigation.
“This apparently intentional
misstatement raises serious ques
tions as to juror bias and impar
tiality,” North’s lawyers said.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A polit
ical crisis and new elections loomed
Tuesday as conservative leader Con
stantine Mitsotakis was given three
days to form a government but was
rejected by a possible left-wing coali
tion partner.
Both Mitsotakis’s New Democracy
Party and the communist-dominated
leftist alliance, who together won
nearly 60 percent of Sunday’s vote,
say a new government first must
punish those responsible for the
scandals of the defeated socialist ad
ministration of Premier Andreas Pa-
pandreou.
But the alliance of the pro-Soviet
Greek Communist Party and the
Greek Left Party, which finished
third, turned down Mitsotakis’ offer
to join in an interim government
that would investigate the corrup
tion.
The alliance also refuses to coop
erate with Papandreou, making the
possibility of new elections likely and
paralyzing Parliament.
