Judge rules homicide
in death of book dealer
BASTROP (AP) — A Bastrop
County justice of the peace has ruled
homicide in the gunshot death of
Austin rare book dealer John Jen
kins, but the sheriff remains con
vinced Jenkins waded into the Colo
rado River and shot himself in the
back of the head.
Judge Bill Henderson said the
homicide ruling was based on his
analysis of the path of the bullet that
killed Jenkins and the fact that au
thorities found no weapon.
Jenkins, 49, was found in the river
near Bastrop on April 16. His Rolex
watch, hundreds of dollars in cash
and his credit cards were missing,
and his gold Mercedes Benz had
been abandoned.
Law officers who stand by the sui
cide theory say Jenkins had dis
cussed possible scenarios in which a
person could kill himself and make it
appear like murder.
They also said Jenkins had nu
merous debts and faced additional
questioning about a 1987 arson that

destroyed his book warehouse.
Henderson ruled homicide be
cause, “I am not convinced that the
path of the bullet could have been
done by the man (Jenkins) ... I be
lieve we are looking for a killer, and
I am comfortable in that ruling.”
Sheriff Con Keirsey said he has no
doubt that Jenkins killed himself.
“I don’t think he (Henderson)
studied the facts,” Keirsey said. “The
angle of the bullet is completely
compatible with suicide. We know
the trajectory of the bullet. It’s mea
surable. It’s physics.”
Keirsey told the Austin American-
Statesman that an investigation had
uncovered evidence of a man be
sieged by debts, both from business
and gambling at high-stakes tourna
ments in Nevada, Louisiana and Cal
ifornia.
Court records indicated Jenkins
had defaulted on a $600,000 loan
and faced the possibility of having
his book warehouse and office auc
tioned at a public sale.
