State investigates funds spent by Killeen college to entice new businesses HOUSTON (AP) — The state au ditor’s of fice is investigating various transactions by the American Educa tional Complex in which several mil lion dollars in college funds were used to entice businesses to Killeen. Terrell Blodgett, a University of Texas professor who is conducting a management audit of the Killeen- area community college, said he asked for help after reviewing hun dreds of pages of college documents and interviewing about 60 AEG em ployees, former employees and oth ers connected with the college. The management consultant orig inally expected his study to take six weeks. But the review has stretched for three months and now is slated for completion by June 1. The col lege has agreed to pay UT $6,000 for Blodgett’s services. Blodgett was hired by the college about three months ago after Hobby, Lewis and state Rep. Stan Schlueter, D-Kiileen, agreed that the AEC’s unusual structure and world wide operations should be evaluated by a management expert in the wake of well-publicized problems at iht Killeen institution. Blodgett said state auditors an examining transactions in which tilt college last year took out an $800,000 bank loan to finance itsef- fort to help the city of Killeen and the Killeen Industrial Foundatiot entice the Student Loan Marketing Association to open a center in Kill een. The college spent nearly $500,001 converting a 30,000-square-fooi warehouse into office space for (he center and loaned $335,000 Jo the Industrial Foundation to purchase the building, college documents show. The Killeen Industrial Founda tion then drew up legal papers toof- fer the loan association f ree rent for 36 months with an option to pur chase the building after that time, said AEG Chancellor Jim Anderson. The loan association employs about 60 and is projected to employ 400in about five years. Soviet cosmonaut comes to A&M Friday By Kelly S. Brown STAFF WRITER For the first time in Texas A&M’s history, the University will be visited by a Soviet cosmonaut. A&M will be the third stop Fri day in Soviet cosmonaut Valentin Lebedev’s nationwide book tour. To kick off his visit, L.ebedev will be signing autographs and his book in 601 Rudder from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students and adminis trators can ask Lebedev questions during a press conference at 3 p.m. in Rudder. Luba Diangar, translator of Le bedev’s book, said the cosmonaut will attend Aggie Muster Friday night in G. Rollie White Col iseum. “It’s something I’m sure he’s never been to before,” she said. “I think it will be interesting to see what he thinks about the ceremo- ny. Lebedev’s book, “Diary of a Cosmonaut: 211 Days in Space,' 1 is the first to be written in space. Diangar said it’s an open and critical look at the Soviet space program, and Lebedev "may be receiving some heat in the Soviet Union for it.” Diangar, a Soviet defector who is now an American citizen, came across Lebedev’s story by reading a magazine sent to her by friends in the U.S.S.R. She read a series of articles in diary form that Lebedev had written, and "thought it would make a wonderful book,’’ Di angar said. She translated and published the book after several phone conversations with Lebe dev. They met for the first time in New York Monday, when he be gan the tour. Lebedev remains active in the Soviet space program, working in the mission control division.
