Freshmen key netters to win over S MU Poll
(Continued from page 7)
FROM STAFF & WIRE REPORTS
The Texas A&M men’s tennis
team recovered from a Saturday loss
to Arkansas and beat Southern
Methodist 5-4 Monday to increase
their record to 9-12 overall and 2-4
in the Southwest Conference.
A&M’s No. 5 man freshman Doug
Brown continued to win by defeat
ing SMU’s Rich Harris 6-2, 6-1 and
teamed with Blake Barsalou, also a
freshman, for a 6-2, 6-2 doubles vic
tory over SMU’s Page Buck and
Harris.
Brown figured in two of the three
match victories for A&M against Ar
kansas, winning his singles and dou
bles matches.
“The key today was to keep the
ball in play and frustrate my oppo
nent,” Brown said. “I’m a freshman
and I don’t feel any pressure. I’m
having fun playing tennis and trying
to help out the team.”
Matt Zissette and Barsalou also
posted singles victories for the Ag
gies. No. 3 Zisette defeated SMU’s
Scott Robertson 6-4, 6-4 while Barsa
lou overcame a first-set loss to Mus
tang Jamie Malakoff for a 3-6, 7-6,
6-1 win.
A&M Coach David Kent said he
was pleased with the performance of
Brown and Barsalou.
“I need to brag on my two fresh
men,” he said. “Doug Brown is un
believable and Blake came through
for us in the clutch. Doug told me
the other day that losing never en
ters his mind when he’s on the
court.”
No. 4 Aggie Craig Whitteker and
No. 2 Gustavo Espinosa, playing in
the No. 2 doubles slot, gave A&M its
fifth victory, winning a 6-2, 6-1 deci
sion over SMU’s Steve Beauchamp
and Mark Kudelko.
Page Buck defeated A&M’s Whit
teker 6-3, 6-4 for the singles win and
Devening and Robertson combined
for a 7-5, 6-1 win over Zisette and
O’Donovan for SMU’s only doubles
win. Kent said the victory was a qual
ity win.
live performances in the Texas se-
In the No. 1 position, SMU’s
Brian Devening defeated A&M’s
Shaun O’Donovan 7-5, 6-1. Espinosa
lost 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to SMU’s No. 2
seed, Kudelko, in a hard-fought
match.
“This is a huge victory for us,” he
said. “Especially since SMU just beat
Texas. It gives us some momentum
going into the conference tourna
ment.
SMU also won the No. 4 singles
seed and the No. 1 doubles match.
A&M travels to Fort Worth this
weekend for the SWC tournament
