Messina Hof Wine Cellar in Bryan
will receive a $250,000 linked de
posit loan, approved by the Texas
Department of Agriculture and the
Texas State Treasury, which will al
low the cellar to expand its wine
processing business.
The expansion, which will in
crease the cellar’s yearly processing
capacity to 45,000 gallons of wine,
will include the addition of a stain
less steel fermentation tank and re
frigeration equipment.
“We expect to double our profita
bility,” said Paul Bonarrigo, who
owns the cellar with his wife Merrill.
Bonarrigo said the expansion will
allow Messina Hof, which opened in
1983, to accommodate its interna
tional distribution. The business dis
tributes wine to Germany, Japan and
Canada, in addition to regions
throughout the United States, and
will begin distributing to Great Brit
ain within a few months, Bonarrigo
said.
Expansions also will be made to
the winery’s retail and visitor facili
ties with the restoration of a Bryan
building, which was a school aca
demy at the turn of the century and
later an ambassador’s residence. The
new facilities will be completed by
August 15, Bonarrigo said.
The $5 million linked deposit loan
program, a joint venture of the state
treasury and agriculture depart
ment, became active in July. The
program provides financial incen
tives to lending institutions to pro
vide loans below the market rate in
terest level for agricultural
diversification projects. First City
Bank of Bryan will fund the winery’s
loan.
“Banks are reticent to go into a
new venture,” Alice Reynolds, ad
ministrator of the Texas Agricultu
ral Diversification Program, said.
Because the loan “buys down” in
terest rates, a bank’s risk of lending
money to finance a new venture is
reduced, Reynolds said.
To be eligible to receive the loan,
a business must must either be pro
ducing an alternative crop — one
which already does not generate rev
enues of $5 million or more in Texas
— using it to process food or fiber
products, or financing the direct
marketing of agicultural products.
In the last two months, 900 re
quests for the loan have been re
ceived. Of the 26 businesses which
applied for the loan this week, 21
loans totalling $3.4 million were ap
proved, Reynolds said.
The loan has helped generate
sales of more than $6 million and
created 80 new jobs, she said.
Officials have proposed the loan
program’s pool of money be in
creased by $20 million. Otherwise,
funds will be depleted within the
next two months, she said.
Official gives diet tips
to help thwart cancer
By Holly Beeson
REPORTER
Extensive research is underway to
evaluate and clarify the role diet
plays in the development of cancer.
So far, no direct cause-effect
relationship has been proven, but of
ficials have indicated that dietary
changes could thwart cancer.
Sally Skaggs, Education in Cru
sade chairman of the Brazos unit of
the American Cancer Society, said
ACS has developed nutritional
guidelines that include adding more
foods high in fiber and vitamins A
and C to the diet, as well as cutting
down on fats, alcohol and salt-cured
foods.
“The evidence suggests that by
practicing some specific principles of
good nutrition, you can reduce your
risk of certain types of cancer,” she
said.
ACS has a theory that if all Ameri
cans stop_ smoking, 83 percent of
lung cancer would be prevented,
Skaggs said.
“With diet and cancer, however,
it’s much less conclusive,” she said.
To reduce cancer risk and im
prove overall health, ACS suggests
these guidelines:
• Avoid obesity.
Sensible eating habits and regular
exercise will help avoid excessive
weight gain.
A study showed that men who are
40 percent or more overweight are
33 percent more likely to get cancer,
while women are 55 percent more
likely.
• Cut down on total fat intake.
Some studies show that excessive
intake of both saturated and unsatu
rated fats enhance human cancer
growth.
