Average cost for room and board at Prairie View was $2,828 and was $3,556 at A&M. Adams also said Prairie View ranked much closer to the University of Texas than Texas A&M in costs for tuition, fees and room and board. While there is no modelistic black or white university, Adams said, pre dominantly black universities are more sensitive to student’s needs and make them feel more at home. “You can’t make a blanket statement that ‘black’ universities are better than ‘white’ universities,” she said. “Prairie View can offer black students different things than Texas A&M can. “It can offer blacks a setting where they’re the majority, which is important for many people’s self confidence. When you believe the institution represents your interests, you feel more comfortable. That’s not to say A&M isn’t representing black student’s interest; it’s just the perception you get. “Prairie View also can offer smaller classes in most cases, and we don’t use teaching assistants to the same degree that A&M does. So there’s a more personalized relationship with the faculty.” Adams said one problem colleges arros<: the nation are farincr with black enrollment is that more black females are attending and complet ing school then are black males. Females constitute 52 percent of Pi airie View’s enrollment for this school year, and Adams said this is a dangerous trend. “With positions in higher educa tion, black women have held steady,” she said. “In 1976, women were ai 5.1 percent, and in 1986 they wereal 5.2 percent. Meanwhile, black men in higher education positions dropped from 4.3 percent in 1976to 3.5 percent in 1986. “Black males are disproportiona tely at risk. Public elementary and secondary institutions tend to have low expectations of black males, and react to their behavior in a dispro portionately punative way. Studies show that black males tend to receive lower grades and less academic sup port than black females or whites.” Adams said Prairie View is not competing with A&M to recruit more minorities because the choice of school depends mostly on the stu dent. “Some black students would feel much more comfortable attending A&M and being able to be just one more student out of the 30,000,” she said. “We’re here to offer an alterna tive to that despite what ethnic ori gin the person is.” What’s Up Friday CAMPUS CRUSADE FOR CHRIST: will have Friday Night Alive at 7:30 p.m. in 108 Harrington.
