Bill Clem ents, whose fondness for plaid sport coats borders on legendary, received checkered 72nd birthday wishes Thursday from dozens of legislators who donned their most outlandish jackets. Laughing and applauding, the lawmakers cheered Clements’ arrival in the House chamber, where he was escorted by about 40 plaid-clad rep resentatives. The governor wore a jacket that was predominantly blue and gold checks. “I’m not sure exactly what re sponse I should make about this sport coat problem,” Clements told lawmakers after they passed his birthday resolution. “I can understand — looking at some of these sport coats — why you all are wearing dark blue all the time. I would have thought my taste in sport coats would give you a better understanding about what’s apropos and what isn’t. Looking at some of these, I just can’t believe it.” Rep. Tom Craddick of Midland, chairman of the House GOP Cau cus, organized the celebration. He said some lawmakers had trouble finding just the right attire. “Ashley Smith (of Houston) paid $2.50 for his at Goodwill,” Craddick said. “Some borrowed them from some of the clubs around town that lend you a coat when you go in with out one.” The lawmakers’ coats ranged from red plaids to greens to a sky blue number with navy velvet collar and lapels that was worn by Rep. Jerry Yost of Longview. All provided fodder for jokes. “I had a 1948 Ford when I was in high school. These were the seat cov ers,” Rep. Richard Smith of Bryan said of his red plaid jacket. He later admitted to having worn it while be ing sworn in as a city councilman in the 1970s. Houston’s Rep. Ron Wilson said he doesn’t own any plaid but did the next best thing. He made his own, showing up in a cream-colored sport coat plastered with brown packing- tape stripes. It featured a tic-tac-toe layout on the back, complete with Xs and Os. “Ten years from now, everybody’s going to be wearing these things. I’m telling you,” Wilson said. Not everyone believed. “Is that Ron Wilson or an un claimed UPS package?” Beaumont Rep. Mark Stiles asked. Rep. Harold Dutton of Houston wore a plain, dark suit and declared, “This is real bad. That’s why Austin doesn’t have a zoo. People can come over here.” Rep. Steve Wolens of Dallas asked plaid-wearing Speaker Gib Lewis, “Is the House advised as to the num ber of polyesters that had to be killed for one of those coats?” United Way hires detective to study shelter HOUSTON (AP) — A private de tective hired by the United Way is in vestigating safety and health condi tions at the Star of Hope men’s shelter, which receives a fourth of its annual $4 million budget from the charitable organization. United Way Director Betty Beene said Houston private investigator Clyde Wilson will spend the next several weeks studying conditions at the shelter, said to be the largest homeless facility in Houston. “We’ve never employed a special investigator to provide assurances of the level of quality of an agency’s op erations or the health and safety of clients,” Beene said. “But this is a unique kind of oper ation. It’s not the kind of service de livery where we can simply go in and check case cards and randomly call and follow up with the people served because of the transient nature of the (men’s shelter) population.” Restaurant Report The restaurants listed below were inspected by the Brazos County Health Department April 6-10. Information is taken from a food service establishment in spection report. SCORED BETWEEN 95 AND 100: La Taqueria at 102 Church St. was inspected by David Pickens. Score — 99. One point was de ducted because the floor in the storeroom was dirty. Subway at 2486 Texas Ave. was inspected by David Pickens. Score — 96. Two two-point viola tions were cited because food wasn’t protected during storage and the sheer was dirty. Little Caesars at 601 Univer sity Dr. was inspected by David Pickens. Score — 94. Four points were deducted because the back door closer was broken. Two points were deducted because mushrooms weren’t covered. SCORED BETWEEN 80 AND 85: Gumby’s Pizza at 1702 Kyle was inspected by David Plett. Score — 85. Five points were de ducted because personnel had dirty hands. Two four-point vio lations were cited because a door was propped open and restrooms were inaccesible. Two points were deducted because the restroom didn’t have a self-closing door. David Jefferson, a registered sanitarian at the department, says restaurants with scores of 95 or above generally have excellent oper ations and facilities. He says restaurants with scores in the 70s or low 80s usually have serious violations in the health report. Scores can be misleading, Jefferson says, because restaurants can get the same score by having several minor violations or a few major violations. He says the minor violations can be corrected during the inspection. Point deductions or violations in the report range from one point (minor violations) to five points (major violations). Jefferson says the department might close a restaurant if: the score is below 60, the personnel have infectious diseases, the restau rant lacks adequate refrigeration, there is a sewage backup in the building or the restaurant has a complete lack of sanitization for the food equipment. The department inspects each restaurant every six months. Jef ferson says a follow-up inspection is sometimes required if a restau rant has a four- or five-point violation that cannot be corrected dur ing the inspection, or if there are numerous small violations. Insoectors at the department are registered sanitarians. PIZZA SALE! PERSONAL PAN PIZZA* READY IN 5 MINUTES.GUARANTEED. Just For One • Just For Lunch Guaranteed 11:30 AM-l.OO PM.
