Three weeks into the young out
door track season, five Aggies
posted NCAA Championship qual
ifying times Saturday at the College
Station Relays. A total of 10 athletes
posted qualifying times.
Fresh off a third-place finish at
the NCAA Indoor Championships,
A&M’s men’s team dominated as
four of the eight men’s qualifying
times were posted by Aggies.
Junior college transfer Richard
Bucknor got the Aggies off to a
quick start by qualifying for the 1 IO
meter hurdles with a time of 13.69.
Any time faster than 13.80 qualifies
for the Championships on May 31.
Bucknor’s time was also a track and
meet record.
The next Aggie to post a qualify
ing time was All-American Andre
Cason with a 10.18 in the 100-meter
dash. The time was also a meet re
cord. Cason owns the school record
of 10.08 set last year in Florida.
Sophomore Kary Vincent was sec
ond in the 100 at 10.32 and just
missed the qualifying time of 10.29.
“My legs were tight a little from
football practice, but since this was
the first (home) meet I wanted to see
what I could do,” Vincent said.
A&M showed its speed and depth
again in the 200-meter dash as A&M
took first and third in the event.
Stanley Kerr won the event with a
time of 20.37 to qualify for the
NCAA’s, followed by Ron Hancock
of UT-Arlington at 20.45. Derrick
Florence was third at 20.57. A&M’s
Howard Davis finished fourth at
20.74.
A&M’s Robert Graf qualified for
the NCAAs in the discus by placing
second with a throw of 189 feet 10
1/4 inches. Lars Sundt of Southern
Methodist won the discus with a
throw of 191-5 1/2.
A&M’s dominance of the meet did
not stop with the cjualifying times as
A&M won the 400-meter relay with
a time of 39.91, and the 1600-meter
relay with a time of 3:10.64. The
1600-meter relay finished three sec
onds ahead of second-place Okla
homa.
A&M swept the high jump as the
first four places were claimed by Ag
gies. Wally Reid won the event by
jumping 7-1. David Koenig and Pat
Poteet tied for second at 7-1. Reid
won on fewer misses. Mike Howell
placed fourth at 6-11.
“We were real pleased with the
high jumpers,” A&M Assistant
Coach Ted Nelson said. “They really
came through.”
Junoir Jay Hoage placed second
in the javelin for A&M with a toss of
194-2 1/2 and Ray Griffith placed
second in the 400-meter dash with a
time of 49.39.
The women’s track team shared
the spotlight with the University of
Minnesota and the University of Ok
lahoma.
Freshman Kasandra McDaniel
won the 200-meter dash for A&M
with an NCAA-qualifying time of
23.54. The NCAA standard is 23.55.
Sophomore Rosalynn Hunt was sec
ond at 23.78. Darlene Morganfield
of OU was third.
A&M and OU battled for first in
almost every sprint and relay event.
Katharine Burns of OU won the
100-meter dash while Regina Gentry

Wendy Watson of OU won the
400 as Lady Aggies Trisha Harris,
Monica Banks and Jackie Jones
came in second, third and fourth.
OU also edged out A&M for first
in the 400-meter relay. In the 1600-
meter relay it looked like A&M
would get some revenge as they were
leading OU heading into the final
turn, but Harris pulled a hamstring
and Oklahoma won.
Harris was able to finish the race
as A&M finished second almost four
seconds behind.
Minnesota dominated the dis
tance events as they placed first in
the 1500-meter run, and swept the
first five places in the 5000. Eileen
Donaghy, who won the 5000, lapped
10 of the 14 runners in the race.
A&M fared well in the field sched
ule as they placed in three of the
events.
Yolanda Taylor won the triple
jump as she set a school and meet re
cord with a jump of 40-8 1/2. Taylor
also placed second in the long jump,
behind OU’s Kerri Benson.
All-American Melinda Clark fin
ished in a tie for second in the high
jump with SMU’s Natalie Munroe.
Barbara Hickey of* Lamar won the
event with a jump of 6-1/4, which
was a track and meet reacord and
qualified her for the NCAA cham
pionships.
A&M’s Gwen Buck placed fourth
in the high jump and Lady Aggies
Sara Arnuad and Sandra Hines tied
for fifth.
Both the men’s and the women’s
team will be in action next weekend
as A&M hosts the Texas A&M
Quadrangular Saturday.
Alabama, Clemson and Baylor
will be competing in the four-team
meet.
Lady Aggie Sandra Hines narrowly clears the high jump bar. She placed fifth in the event.
Jay Hoage watches his javelin sail over 194 feet — enough to win second place for the Aggies.
