BUT REAL
HEAVYWEIGHTS
WHEN RESULTS
REALLY COUNT.
The search continues for the miss
ing link in the Texas A&M basket
ball attack.
Texas Tech defeated the Aggies
75-68 Saturday. It was A&M’s fourth
straight Southwest Conference loss.
A&M had the homecourt fans, an
opponent that had a worse overall
record, and expectations of halting a
losing skid. It wasn’t enough. There
was just something missing.
The Aggies are now 8-11, includ
ing a 1-6 conference mark. The loss
was A&M’s ninth in the last 10
games.
“We’re struggling,” said senior
forward Donald Thompson. “It’s a
1-2 punch, but three’s not there.
“It’s very frustrating. We’ve prac
ticed and practiced and we’re still
not winning. We’re missing some
thing but don’t know what it is. We’ll
figure it out.”
Coach Shelby Metcalf was equally
baffled.
“We’re working hard and we’re
trying,” he said. “We don’t have any
excuses.”
Tech didn’t need any excuses.
The Red Raiders brought in a 7-10
record (2-4 in SWC), and came away
with a thrilling victory —at least
thrilling to them.
Tech’s post-game jubilation didn’t
__ even seem to bother the Aggies —
fans, players or coaches. Taunting
was meaningless to the Aggies. They
just want to win.
But it was Tech’s night. More spe
cifically, it was Todd Duncan and
J.D. Sanders’ night.
Sanders, 6-8 and 230 pounds, was
Tech’s inside game. Duncan, a 6-1
sharp-shooting guard, was their out
side game.
The two combined for almost half
of the Red Raiders’ points (37) and
were always there to counter the Ag
gies comeback attempts.
Sanders led Tech with 18 points.

field, including four of five from
three-point land in a substitute ap
pearance.
“Duncan killed us,” Metcalf said.
“We knew he was that kind of a
shooter —the guys covering him
didn’t do a good enough job.”
The second half opened with
Tech on top 34-28. After pulling out
to an eight-point advantage on a
Duncan three-pointer, Tech let the
Aggies close the gap at 41-37. That
was as close as it would get.
Tech mounted up and rode. Se
nior guard Sean Gay hit a 16-foot
jumper before two Sanders’ buckets
—a layup and a dunk. Duncan put
the finishing touches on the nine-
point run with another bombtojj
Tech a 50-37 edge.
Aggie Lynn Suber came in to]
his first points of the game with
minutes and six seconds in the hi:

minutes.

Some traditions just aren’t worth
keeping. Slow starts by the Texas
A&M Lady Aggies are becoming a
tradition.
The Lady Aggies lost to Texas
Tech 84-77 Saturday in G. Rollie
White Coliseum, after falling behind
11-2 at the start of the game.
It was the fourth time in as many
games that the Lady Aggies have
gotten away to a slow start and the
second time they lost because of it.
“I guess it’s an Aggie traditon to
fall behind and have to play catch-up
ball the rest of the night,” A&M cen
ter Lisa Jordon said. Jordon led the
Lady Aggies with 18 points.
Saturday’s loss marked only the
AM
seventh time this season that Donna
Roper was not the leading scorer.
Roper finished with 17 points and
Louise Madison scored 16 before
fouling out late in the game.
Texas Tech was led by freshman
Jennifer Buck with a career high 22
points and center Stacey Siebert with
21.
“(Tech) killed us with their inside
game,” A&M head coach Lynn
Hickey said. “We tried to front Bud
and Siebert and their guards f
them the ball anyway. They

The Red Raiders shot 60 perceu
for the game compared to A&Ms5
percent.
The game had been billed asadt
fensive matchup with A&M conij
into the game fifth in the nation
field goal percentage defense (35!
percent) and Tech coming in nine
(36.8 percent).
“They played hard,” Jordon saii
“We tried to front Buck and Siebti
and the guards got the ball to then
anyway. They deserved to win.”
Despite falling behind early, Ail
made several runs at the LadyRai
