Finals bring munchies

Finals week means big
changes. Regular study
schedules give way to late-
night cramming, to rushing
around under stress and, in
many cases, to a different diet.
Finals affect not only
students, but local businesses
trying to keep the students fed.
Studying students eat a lot.
The biggest sales increases
are in pizza, the 24-hour
restaurant business, and
alcohol and caffeine products
—caffeine tablets sell just as
well as coffee.
In the week before finals,
restaurants near campus are
practically deserted during
normally busy hours. The
International House of
Pancakes was completely
deserted at 6 p.m. Monday
except for a waitress and a
cook, but they said they
expected a big crowd soon.
“They don’t come in just
one or two at a time, ” waitress
Falesha Bandy said. “They
come in groups of seven or
eight or more, and the biggest
seller is definitely coffee. ” She
added that the study area at the
back of the restaurant stays full
all night long and into the early
morning.
Carol Starlin, another IHOP
waitress, said that about 95
percent of the students eat
while they study. “Sandwiches
and breakfasts are the most
popular,” she said. “A lot of the
students come in, eat, then
study, then eat again before
they leave.”
She also said she prefers to
serve Aggies. “They’re never
any trouble, and they even
help clean up if things are really
busy, ” she said.
Some students, however,
like to stay at home to study.
During finals week, Dominoes’
Pizza delivery business jumps
30 percent
Employee Tim McColloch
said he can tell when orders will
come in during most of the
year. “Commercials during a
TV miniseries always bring a
rush,” he said. “During finals
though, we stay busy all night
long.”
It would seem that finals
week is a good time for
business, but it isn’t without its
pitfalls. McCulloch said that
more Dominoes’ employess
quit without notice during finals
than any other time of the year.
Grocery stores also see an
increase in business during
finals. Skaggs Alpha Beta
employee Bryan Warran said,
“We sell a lot of snacks, a lot of
junk food and a lot of Vivarin. ”
One item that drops in sales
during finals is liquor. Coach’s
Liquor employees note a
slump every year that coincides
with finals week.
On the other hand, stress
brings people together, and
Ricky Becker said he expects to
be busy at the Dixie Chicken.
“As soon as they’re finished,
they’re ready to party, ” he
said. He guesses that the
beginning of the week will
bring normal business, but said
that “Thursday through
Saturday will be a madhouse,
because not only will finals be
over, the parents will be in
town.”
