"Have a Merry Chess
Christmas"
Various artists
MCA/Chess Records
★★★ V2
Have a Merry Chess
Christmas offers an
alternative to the classic
holiday album, featuring a
variety of early rock and soul
Christmas songs.
During the 1950s and
’60s, Chess Records was
known for its stable of soul
and rock talent that included
Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley
and the O’Jays, as well as
gospel groups such as the
Soul Stirrers, who
introduced the legendary
Sam Cooke to the world.
The album’s selections of
holiday tunes is, if nothing
else, eclectic. Rocker Chuck
Berry contributes two songs,
the rock’n’ roll of “Run
Rudolph Run” and the the
soulful “Merry Christmas
Baby.” “Run Rudolph Run”
is Berry’s interpretation of
the song “Rudolph,” a 1949
hit for cowboy crooner
Gene Autry. In Berry's
hands, the song is as much
fun as “Roll Over
Beethoven” and “Johnny B.
Goode. ” “Merry Christmas
Baby” is a slower cut,
indicative of Berry’s rhythm
and blues roots.
The album’s greatest
strength, however, is in the
vocals by the various
groups. With a lineup that
includes vocal girl group the
Gems, doo-wop quartet the
Moonglows and gospel
ensembles, the listener
expects some sweet vocal
harmonies. The album
delivers. The Gems’ “Love
for Christmas” and the Soul
Stirrers’ “Christmas Means
Love” are two standouts —
the former a fine example of
the 1960s girl group sound,
the latter proof that gospel
singers can do secular soul
music, too.
A real treat is the
Moonglows’ “Hey Santa
Claus. ” Combining the four-
part vocal harmonies of the
group with musical backing
that resembles a 1940s
swing combo, the song is
just plain fun to listen to.
The Meditation Singers’
“Blue Christmas,” however,
strikes a serious chord.
Originally recorded in 1968
while the Vietnam War was
raging, the song asks us to
remember those who are
there and to remember the
sacrifice they are making.
Considering that many
American servicemen are
overseas away from their
families this season, the song
is not necessarily out of date.
The combination of fun
and serious, spiritual and
secular, and the fine lineup
of talent, make Have a
Merry Chess Christmas a
good deal for some new
Christmas music.

"Mystic Pizza"
Starring Annabeth Gish, Lili
Taylor, and Julia Roberts.
Directed by Donald Petrie
Rated R
★★★
The ads for “Mystic Pizza”
bill it “a romantic comedy with
the works. ” The billing is
mostly true, but the film at
times gets a little heavy on the
cheese. “Mystic Pizza” is a
romantic comedy that utilizes a
somewhat cliched storyline of
three women looking for love.
All three find love, but only one
keeps it, while another loses it
and the third goes unsure.
What’s more, it doesn’t take
long to figure out what
happens to whom.
But despite the
predictability, the film works
and is enjoyable. Stars
Annabeth Gish, Lili Taylor and
Julia Roberts all are great in
their roles, playing characters
who are believable and that the
viewer can come to care about.
The three women are
waitresses at a pizza restaurant
in the tourist trap of Mystic,
Conn. Gish plays Kat, a
straight-arrow, Yale-bound
woman who falls in love with
Tim, a married architect.
Roberts is Daisy, Kat’s sexy
sister who falls for Charles, a
preppy rich kid expelled from
law school. Taylor plays Jo Jo,
whose fears of growing fat and
being cooped up in a house full
of rug rats keep her from
marrying Bill, the lobster
fisherman she is engaged to.
As the movie goes on, we
see the three women’s love
lives changing. At one
moment, it’s for the better; at
the next, it’s for the worst. Jo
Jo. goes from fainting at her
wedding at the beginning of the
film to fighting with Bill. Daisy,
charmed by the charm and
bright-red Porsche of Charlie,
falls for him before suspecting
she’s being used. Kat, teasingly
called “St. Kat” by Daisy,
romanticises about Tim before
reality hits like a bucket of cold
water when Tim’s wife returns
home from England.
It is the play between these
characters that make “Mystic
Pizza” what it is. It isn’t the best
thing in town, but it’s a pleasant
moviegoing experience
nevertheless.

"Scrooged"
Starring Bill Murray
Directed by Richard
Donner
Rated PG-13
★★★★
If Charles Dickens were
alive today and had written
his holiday classic, “A
Christmas Carol, ” in the
1980s, the story might have
been something like
“Scrooged. ” The new
movie starring Bill Murray is
a sure-fire winner for this
year’s holiday film season
and is guaranteed to cause
side-splitting laughter.
Murray plays Frank
Cross, a mean and nasty
television network president.
Frank programs
promotional ads for his
network’s Christmas
programs that scare viewers
to death and holiday movies
such as “The Night the
Reindeer Died. ” He even
fires one of his executives
and throws him into the
street on Christmas Eve.
Frank is not beyond help,
however. He is visited by the
ghosts of Christmas past,
present and future. These
ghosts, however, are a little
different from those in
Dickens’ story. The Ghost of
Christmas Past (David
Johansen, a.k.a. Buster
Poindexter) is a slovenly cab
driver who blows cigar
smoke out of his ears.
Christmas Present (Carol
Kane) is a perky, winged
fairy who also has a mean
right cross. The Ghost of
Christmas Future is a
gruesome creature with
various apparitions living
within his entrails.
If you ve read “A
Christmas Carol” or seen
one of the many film
adaptations of the story, you
know basically how the story
goes. However,
"Scrooged.” with its many
laughs, modem setting and
great cast is anything but
another copy.
Director Richard Donner
assembles a superb cast of
comic talent for this film. Bill
Murray, whipping out one-
liners and wisecracks, gives
one of his best performances
ever as Frank Cross, the
video-age Scrooge.
“Scrooged” also marks
the first time Bobcat
Goldthwait has appeared in
a film worth remembering.
Goldthwait plays Elliott
Loudermilk, the fired
executive who becomes a
shotgun-toting madman out
for revenge. David
Johansen and Carol Kane
are both a scream in their
respective ghostly roles.
The film also boasts some
cameos worth watching for.
“Scrooged” is one of the
best Christmas movies made
in a long time and one of the
funniest movies of the year.
