While the tune of mother and
Texas A&M student is the song
Lois Anderson sings, her daugh
ter, Lisa, dances to the sound of
a different horn -Longhorn,
that is.
Ignoring all advice to stay true
to the maroon, Lisa Anderson is
pursuing a business degree from
The University of Texas, while
her mother completes a degree
in elementary education.
“We tried to show her all the
good things she could do if she
stayed here,” Mrs. Anderson
said. “We did everything in our
power to get her to stay here.”
However, Mrs. Anderson said
that her daughter’s reasons for
not choosing A&M went beyond
deciding which school she really
preferred.
“We decided that it wasn’t that
she didn’t like A&M,” Mrs. An
derson said. “We decided it
more that she was ready to get
out on her own.
“Also, I went to school with
my mother, and I think Lisa just
decided that she didn’t want to
do that.”
Regardless of her reasons for
choosing U.T., the young An
derson gets more than her share
of reminders that she chose the
school on the other end of High
way 6, Mrs. Anderson said.
“I think my son (Mark) is the
one who really keeps the rivalry
up,” Mrs. Anderson said. “He
gets in there and says, ‘A&M is
going to whip U.T.!’ He doesn’t
back down.”
Sisterly love doesn’t spare Lisa
any jabbing from her younger
sister, Gretchen, Mrs. Anderson
said. Because Gretchen is a
cheerleader at A&M Consolo-
dated High School, she also
keeps the rivalry up, Mrs. An
derson said.
“She’s (Gretchen) a
cheerleader, so she’s really in
volved in the sports,” Mrs. An
derson said. “I think she’s a real
A&M fan, and she lets her sister
know it.”
However, the Longhorn in
the family doesn’t take anything
sitting down, Mrs. Anderson
said.
“When stuff starts happening,
Lisa doesn’t back down,” she
said. “She hangs in there and
gives us the Horn sign, and she
acts like she just doesn’t care that
we’re all Aggies. We just have
fun with her.”
Although Lisa’s father doesn't
tease her since she made the de
cision to choose U.T., Mrs. An
derson said he gave Lisa some
advice to help distinguish why
being an Aggie is important.
“Like he (Lisa’s father) said,
once you’re an Aggie, you’re al
ways an Aggie, and you’re
known everywhere.”
