Alabama to determine 2 bowl berths
Associated Press
Alabama might be watching the
Jan. 2 bowl games on television, but
at least the Crimson Tide will have
determined the makeup of two of
the final postseason contests.
On Friday, Alabama plays Au
burn at Birmingham. If Alabama
wins, Louisiana State will go to the
Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2 to face Florida
State, while Auburn will head to the
Flail of Fame Bowl the same day to
meet Syracuse.
If Auburn wins, the Tigers will
represent the Southeastern Confer
ence in the Sugar Bowl at New Or
leans and Louisiana State will play in
the Flail of Fame at Tampa, Fla.
“I’m just thrilled to get to go to the
Sugar Bowl,” said Florida State
Coach Bobby Bowden. “Never hav
ing had the opportunity to play in it,
it is going to be a great thrill for me.”
All of the other bowl matchups
were completed after Saturday’s
games, with top-ranked Notre Dame
heading for a Jan. 2 Fiesta Bowl bat
tle against No. 4 West Virginia.
“They seem to be a very good
team, better than us right now,”
Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz said
of West Virginia.
Victories Saturday bj Southern
California and Nebraska settled four
Jan. 2 matchups: the O ange, Rose,
Cotton and Citrus Bowl .
Southern Cal, by defeating UCLA
31-22, clinched the Pacific-10 Con
ference title and a Rose Bowl berth
against Michigan. UCLA goes to the
Cotton Bowl to Arkansas.
“UCLA is an outstanding team, as
good a team as there is in the na
tion,” Arkansas Coach Ken Hatfield
said.
Nebraska became the Big Eight
champion by edging Oklahoma 7-3.
With the victory, the Cornhuskers
go to the Orange Bowl to play Mi
ami, Fla., while Oklahoma will take
on Clemson in the Citrus Bowl.

matchups are:

I don’t understand the defense’s
performance in the first half,
though. They start slow almost every
game, but the problem is that they
have come to accept the slow starts.
Maybe the problem is that the Ag
gies have to get mad before they play
to their potential.
I was impressed with Slocum’s
performance. In all of the mess
that’s going on, he seems to be a rock
for the program. He’s one of those
“How-did-you-get-in-the-middle-of-
