Inside Dear Readers: Within the past few years, A&M has been trying to improve its status world-wide. Including line arts classes will help broaden the views of A&M students. The improvements now being made include changing the course requirements for new students and increasing the number of fine arts classes being offered. Students are starting to reap the benefits of A&M’s changes as it becomes a world class university. This week At Ease decided to find out what cultural changes A&M is trying to implemen t and the success of the ones they have established. The emphasis on engineering and agriculture may soon include the study of the fine arts. For our main story we learned why the University is trying to form a College of Fine Arts and how they plan to achieve this goal. In our second story we looked at the changes A&M has made in the core curriculum. Although these changes will not affect many of you, students enrolling under the 1988-89 handbook will have to consider taking many classes not previously required. These include foreign languages and computer classes. For this week's At Ease we have brought back an old feature, Aggenizing Answers, and have asked you, the student body, what characteristics you believe make up a world class university. Finally, we learned about a musical event that takes place in the Academic building every Wednesday. If you're interested, bring a brown bag lunch and join the rest of the a udience for a relaxing musical experience. But students and faculty are doing a lot to improve fine arts programs on campus. And the University isn’t quite the cultural black hole it used to be. Fine arts isn’t going to be catered to your door at A&M, but if you look past your cup of yo gurt, you’ll find culture on campus. Curriculum changes 10 The new core curriculum is likely to affect new students and the classes they will take. It is also causing changes in departments and colleges throughout the University, and some of these changes are already affecting students. Aggenizing answers 7 What changes would push A&M closer to world-class sta tus? That’s the question we asked students this week. Brown bag concerts 11 The Brown Bag Concert Series, sponsored by MSC OPAS Stark Series and the Department of Philosophy and Humanities, is giving people an eclectic taste of cul ture in the Academic Building at noon on Wednesdays this semester. Live Music 4 Omar and the Howlers is the Texas band that’s next in line down the road to fame, Shane says. If you missed their latest performance in town, don’t miss their next one. Album Review 5 Johnny Winter has filled his latest album with blistering blues and rock, Shane says. Movie Review fi Shane found that “Elvira, Mistress of the Dark” was a to tally silly movie — and a lot of fun — thanks to Elvira’s off-color humor.
