SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Local
judges should be given a stronger
say in determining which juvenile
offenders will be released from re
form school, and when, a San Anto
niojurist said.
State District Judge Tom Rickhoft
called a Dec. 9 meeting of metropol
itan juvenile judges in San Antonio
to discuss the recidivism of juveniles
released from facilities run by the
Texas Youth Council.
“I've quit sending them to the
TYC unless they’re the kind I have
to manacle to a post to keep in the
courtroom,” Rickhoff, Bexar Coun
ty’s only juvenile judge, said.
“Frankly, we can’t trust them
(TYC) to keep (the juveniles) or to
have a plan for them when they get
out,” Rickhoff told the San Antonio
Light.
Rickhoff said he is proposing that
the Texas Legislature give local
judges more input into the release of
young offenders from state juvenile
facilities.
Additionally, Rickhoff said, the
state should contract with countyju-
venile probation offices to supervise
state parolees because there are not
enough state parole officers to do
the job adequately.
According to figures gathered by
Rickhoff, 73 percent of juveniles re
leased by the TYC in Bexar County
are rearrested or are referred bad
to TYC by parents, teachers or other
authorities.
Elvis sightings
may be subject
of new book
RED OAK (AP) —Just the other
day, Elvis Presley was walking out of
a 7-Eleven store in Waxahachie sing
ing “Blue Suede Shoes,” and, well,
. wait a minute. No, he was at a ga
rage sale in Seagoville when ... but
then again he’s hiding out in Lancas
ter, or maybe he’s holed up in a
house behind the drugstore in
Ovilla.
Or maybe, heaven forbid, he’s
dead.
Rumored sightings of Elvis have
circulated nationwide almost since
the day he was pronounced dead
(Aug. 16, 1977) and have shown par
ticular strength in recent months,
with an increase in the Dallas area.
Whatever Presley’s disposition,
two men in the northern Ellis
County community of Red Oak are
having a great time listening to peo
ple who seriously and not-so-se-
riously believe they’ve witnessed The
King of Rock ’n’ Roll in recent
weeks.
In fact, they hope to publish a
book on what they uncover.
David Kelly and Glenn Gill
thought it would be fun to compile
“eyewitness reports” with the idea of
finding a publisher. So they put ads
in the personals column of the Dallas
newspapers asking whether anyone
had seen Elvis in Waxahachie about
Oct. 10.
