Page 16 The Battalion Monday, November 7,1988 Giants win; Dallas drops 6th straight EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Phil Simms threw two touchdown passes to Stephen Baker and Law rence Taylor forced two turnovers that led to scores as the New York Gi ants gave a brief glimpse of their 1986 Super Bowl form and defeated Dallas 29-21 Sunday, handing the Cowboys their sixth straight loss. Paul McFadden added field goals of 37, 47 and 50 yards as the Giants, 7-3, won their fourth straight game to remain in first place in the NFC East. The loss practically assurred Dal las, 2-8, of its third straight losing season, and the six-game skid marked the first time Dallas has dropped that many in one season since their first year. In 1960, they lost 10 straight before tying the Giants. The Cow boys have had two six-game losing streaks since then, but each was over two seasons, the last one in 1986-87. Five of the Cowbovs’ seven losses this season had happened in the final two minutes of games. This one was in the books by halftime as the Giants built a 26-0 lead by scoring on five straight possessions. However, Dallas made it close at the end as Kevin Sweeney came off the bench and threw touchdown passes of 1-yard to Steve Folsom, nine yards to Michael Irvin and two yards to Ray Alexander, that one coming with 1:59 to play. Dallas recovered the onsides kick but got only to the Giants’ 29. Taylor personally Set up two touch downs with sacks of starting quar terback Steve Pelluer. With New York leading 3-0, Tay lor knocked the ball out of Pelluer’s hands with one of his classic hand chops. George Martin recovered at the Dallas 22 and, six plays later, Ot- tis Anderson scored from a yard out. McFadden stretched the lead to 13- 0 with a 50-yard field goal, then Simms and Baker took over, with a little help from the Giants defense. New York got the ball back when Harry Carson recovered a Herschel Walker fumble at the New York 15. The Giants went the 85 yards in 10 plays, with Simms hitting Baker for the final 22 yards on a stop-and-go pattern for a 20-0 lead. Two plays later, Taylor sacked Pelluer from behind and Erik Howard fell on the loose ball at the Dallas 8. After a 2-yard run by Joe Morris, Simms hit Baker in the back of the end zone from six yards out. Dallas got within 26-14 on the Ir vin touchdown, but McFadden kicked his 47-yarder with 7:46 to go. In the comeback, the Cowboys converted on four of five fourth-down attempts, with Irvin and Alexander catching their touchdowns on fourth down. Swimming (Continued from page 13) keep using that word to describe her, but I don't know of a better one to use.” Habermas earned that description by finishing first in three individual events. She won the 200-meter freestyle, the 200-meter individual medley and the 200-meter backstroke to lead the Lady Aggies. Laura Grimes, a freshman from San Antonio, won the 200-meter breasts troke, the 400-meter individual medley and aided a first-place finish by A&M in the 400-meter medley relay. Grimes was joined by Courtney Searcy, Michelle Chow and Joan Wojtowicz on the relay team.
