Mavericks cut Farmer, trim roster to 12 DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Maver icks reached the NBA’s 12-man roster limit Thursday by waiving 1987 first- round draft pick Jim Farmer and placing fourth-year forward Detlef Schrempf on the injured list. “We really liked Jimmy. We drafted him in the first round and protected him in the expansion draft,” Mavericks Coach John MacLeod said. “But it just didn’t work out. Things just didn’t break.” Farmer averaged two points per game on .377 shooting in 30 games last sea son. During the just completed presea son, Farmer averaged 6.3 points per game. The Mavericks tapped Morion Wiley, a 6-foot-4 guard who was the team’s sec ond round draft pick this year, to take Farmer’s place. Schrempf, who is still recovering from a stress fracture suffered during postsea son play this spring, will be replaced on the roster by Terry Tyler, a 10-year NBA veteran who played the last three seasons with Sacramento. Rolando Blackman injured his left thumb early in practice Thursday and was taken for X-ray. The extent of the injury was not immediately known, but a serious injury could force the team to keep Farmer for Friday night’s season opening game. MacLeod said he thought Farmer would be snatched by find another team quickly. “There’s no doubt in my mind Jimmy Farmer will be playing for somebody in the league within a week, ” MacLeod said. “I’d be surprised if he isn’t.” Dallas has attempted to trade Farmer, but has not yet been successful. Farmer’s $200,000 contract is guaranteed for an other year. McCormick gives Rockets flexibility HOUSTON (AP) — Houston’s trade for New Jersey’s Tim McCormick will make the Rockets more flexible when subsituting on the front line, power for ward Otis Thorpe says. The Rockets sent Joe Barry Carroll and Lester Conner to the Nets on Wednesday for McCormick and guards Frank Johnson, Tony Brown and Lo renzo Romar. Romar was waived Thurs day afternoon to bring the roster down to the maximum 12 players. “J.B. was a good offensive player, but with Tim coming in, I think we’ll have that support we need now off the bench,” Thorpe said. “We couldn’t have Akeem going back and forth from power forward to center the whole game.” If the Rockets had kept Carroll, Olaju- won would have found himself playing center with Thorpe in the game and at power forward when Carroll substituted. “McCormick obviously was the thrust of the trade,” Rockets General Manager Ray Patterson said. “He can play both positions.” The trades will eventually make the Rockets a better team, but they won’t be ready for Friday night’s opener at Denver, Coach Don Chaney said. The Rockets have only three players, Olajuwon, Allen Leavell and Buck John son, who were present for the 1987 pre season training camp. ' “We won’t be ready for Denver on Friday night,” Chaney said. “But it’s a long season.” Carroll was slowed by an ankle injury but Chaney was even more distressed at his attitude. Chaney thought Carroll wasn’t giving his full effort. utor. al polls; 2 *^ K Enlargement Tor 1 Special Buy 1 enlargement (5x7 or 8x10) at regular price & get the same size en largement FREE!! 35mm negative only.
