THEM looks at Soviet life
By Shane Hall
Winston Churchill
described the Soviet Union
as “a riddle wrapped in a
mystery inside an enigma. ”
In this age of glasnost and
perestroika, however,
Americans today seem more
curious about the Soviet
nation and its people. Most
of our information about the
Soviet Union has come from
the evening news and the
classroom.
However, a new
magazine offers a look
further behind the Iron
Curtain. The magazine is
called THEM. Published by
a group of Soviet emigres,
THEM takes a deeper
approach at examining the
country and should serve as
a good source of
information for people
curious about all things
Soviet.
As the publisher Si
Frumkin stated in the first
issue’s written introduction,
"‘we are a race of Peeping
; oms. We love to look
behind the scenes, to
uncover what is hidden, to
be privy to secrets. ”
If the first issue is any
indication, THEM will be a
fascinating magazine. The
articles are written by Soviet
emigres living in the United
States and Europe.
Vadim Belotserkovsky, a
political scientist who left the
Soviet Union in the late
1970s, has an article about
the Pamyat organization, a
semi-legal neo-Nazi group.
Their credo, he writes, is that
the Russian nation is the
greatest and that the Judeo-
Masons are the enemies of
not only Russia, but also the
civilized world.
A sidebar to the story tells
of youth groups in the
Soviet Union that are not
recognized by the
government, but that have
emerged nevertheless in the
wake of social reforms by
Mikhail Gorbachev.
According to the article,
there are organizations for
motorcyclists (called
Rokery) and even groups of
heavy metal rock fans
(called Metallisty).
Other features in the
magazine include a story on
the Soviet government’s
attempts to crack down on
prostitution in the country, a
story by a Russian soldier in
Afghanistan, telling of his
experiences there, and an
account of the clashes
between Christian
Armenians and Muslim
Azerbaijanis.
A feature of a lighter
nature lets the reader in on
some jokes in the Soviet
Union that if told to the
wrong person could buy the
teller an extended vacation
in Siberia.
Sample jokes include:
“What’s the difference
between capitalism and
communism?” The answer:
“Under capitalism, man
exploits man. Under
communism it’s the other
way around. ”
One might ask if THEM is
pro- or anti-Soviet. It is not
necessarily either. However,
the contents of the first issue
demonstrate the magazine’s
clear disapproval of the
Soviet system.
