The art of ballet is a difficult one to master. Many people take ballet lessons as children, but few pursue it as a car reer, and even fewer master the art to perfection. One of the best of the best in the world of ballet dancers brought his well-known magic to Rudder auditorium Wednesday night, as Rudolf Nureyev, accompanied by members of the Paris Opera Ballet performed parts of several ballets. The evening ranged from fantasy and myth to modernism as the company per formed selections from “Don Quixote,” “Sleeping Beauty” and “Flower Festi val.” Nureyev’s talent on stage and be hind as choreographer was evident throughout the performance, as he danced or directed his way through most of the tunes. However, Nureyev’s recent illness has taken its toll on the famed dancer. Some of his moves were shakey, or landed off center, and he did not always go to full extension. But Nureyev won the world over with his ability to communicate emotions to an audience through his dance, and this performance was no ex ception. Nureyev was classic in “Apollon Mu- sagete.” His emotions as he dealt with the muses carried the audience right along, even those not familar with the entire story. But he was best in the clos ing selection “Two Brothers.” The mod em choreography and strong emotions fit Nureyev perfectly as he and partner Charles Jude danced their way through an age-old story of brothers fighting to be the most powerful. sent were superb.
