Palmer’s music
mixes old, new
into unique style
Associated Press
Robert Palmer may be the Cary Grant
of the music business. Like Grant, he has
an elegant manner, look and delivery.
His music intrigues the listener with
its seeming simplicity and pulsating
rhythms.
Palmer has managed to mix the new
with old standards, creating a sound
that's all his own and successful.
His recent "Riptide'' album was num
ber one and contained several hits in
cluding "Addicted to Love" and "I
Didn't Mean To Turn You On."
He is currently on tour across the
country in support of his first album for
EMI-Manhattan Records. "Heavy No
va."
The new release shows every indica
tion of following the success of “Ripti
de."
The tour, which will take Palmer to 60
cities, is a mix of old and new. with an
incredible light show added.
Palmer insists on a tour of one-night-
ers.
"I prefer it." said the 39-year-old
Palmer. "When you have a night off. you
lose momentum. We (the band) enjoy
playing together and it takes a couple of
weeks before the show starts to jell.
“The dynamics of any show don't
really start to pick up until you're out
three or four weeks." he said.
"The songs convey a mood, so the
first few weeks you're just learning a
part.”
Palmer has been married 18 years and
has two children. The family lives in Lu
gano, Switzerland, after living 10 years
in the Bahamas.
"Heavy Nova" combines heavy metal
with bossa nova.
Palmer’s music reflects his interest in
different rhythms from all over the
world.
That interest was cultivated while
growing up on the island of Malta in the
Mediterranean where he was exposed to
sounds from Africa and the Middle East.
"I collect music from all over the
world.” Palmer said.
"I have for 18 years." he said. "It
helps in the real drought periods like
Christmas when the music is not very in
teresting."
The different sounds of his childhood
blend with the records from his parents'
collection, such as Nat "King" Cole.
Lena Horne and Peggy Lee.
Songs they sang sometimes have a
strange way of reappearing.
“I had written this song and my
mother called, so 1 played it for her." he
said. "She said. ‘That’s another song.' I
said. 'It can't be because I just wrote it.'
A couple of days later she called back
and played me ‘It Could Happen to You'
Palmer will
hold concert
on campus
Robert Palmer will perform his
Simply Irresistible concert tonight in
Rudder Auditorium at 8 p.in.
About 400 tickets are still available
from the MSC Box Office and Dil
lards for $14. The concert is being
sponsored by MSC Town Hall. For

by Peggy Lee. It was my song. I decided
to record it.
"I don’t sit down at my typewriter
with an empty piece of paper and say.
‘I'm going to write a hit.'
“I just get an idea." he said. “Songs
are floating around in the air and I write
them down. If there isn't any inspiration,
the song doesn't get written.
"I don't tailor my music to a certain
market." Palmer said.“You want to
write a song that you'll enjoy perform
ing.
“It would be horrible to write a song
that you hated, only to have it become a
hit and you had to play it all the time.”
In addition to "It Could Happen to
You" on the album, he has also recorded
“Tell Me I’m Not Dreaming." which was
originally done by the Jacksons.
"We'd been doing it in the show for
some time.” he said. “It was a good vehi
cle for B.J. and me to sing. Then, I saw
a video of us doing it and I thought.
‘That’s great.' so we recorded it.”
Palmer's career has been one of steady
gain since he launched his solo career on
Island Records in 1974.
He has had several hits including "Ev
ery Kind of People." "Bad Case of Lov
ing You" and "You Are in My System."
It was Palmer’s voice (hat combined
with John Taylor and Andy Taylor from
Duran Duran in Power Station — which
had three huge hits in the summer of
1986. Palmer opted not to tour with
Power Station but instead recorded "Rip
tide.
His catalog of albums reflects his di
versity.
However, he doesn't indulge that in
terest just to have a different sound.
“I've some tapes and they would be
considered weird but I wouldn't put them
on a record.” he said.
"Nobody would play them.” Palmer
said. “If a song doesn't communicate,
what's the point? "

Texas A&M is one of 24 universities
receiving grants from Atlantic Richfield
Co. to. recruit and retain minority stu
dents pursuing careers in engineering,
science and business.
Grants this year total $992,190, in
cluding individual grants ranging from
$10,000 to $50,000.
Dr. Robert L. Walker, A&M vice
president for development, said many of
these grants will be used immediately for
programs that departments already have
created.
This is the second consecutive year the
foundation has funded the recruitment-
retention program.
Because the foundation noticed a se
vere shortage of black and Hispanic en
gineers. most of the funds will be used
for undergraduate engineering programs.
Grants will be used for recruiting spe
cialists to work with minority high
schools and hiring counselors, tutors and
workshop organizers. It also will be used
to prepare special study places where
students can study in teams.
Lodwrick M. Cook, ARCO chairman
and chief executive officer, said. "We
have found that even with scholarships
and other financial assistance, many mi
nority youngsters enrolled in science, en
gineering and business courses never
complete their college education." he
said.
“While no single-funding source can
solve the growing problem of minority
under-representation in science and engi
neering. we believe the spotlight must
stay focused on the retention issue.”
The foundation received applications
from 40 institutions.
"We are pleased to see that more col
leges and universities recognized the
need and applied for our grants,” Cook
said.
Twenty-two criteria were used by the
foundation to evaluate the engineering
grant proposals.
Among the criteria are the strength of
existing minority student programs, the
percent of minority enrollment in engi
neering and minority graduates, the per
cent of minority engineering degrees and
the academic disciplines being consid
ered for support.
Other Texas schools receiving funds
arc Rice University. Southern Methodist
University. Texas Tech University, the
University of Houston and the University
of Texas at Austin.
