Lloyd Bent- sen Thursday night to blast George Bush’s record on tackling the na tion’s drug problem and fighting crime. Dukakis and Bensten met with Combined Law Enforcement Asso ciations of Texas, which has pre viously endorsed the Democratic ticket. “The Bush record on drugs and crime is a failure,” Dukakis said at a news conference. “It’s a failure. There is nothing the vice president can do to change that.” Dukakis accused Bush and the rest of the Reagan administration of being out of touch with state and lo cal law enforecement officials and failing to provide the leadership needed to stem increasing crime, es pecially drug-related crimes. “Leaders and officials, educators and law enforcement officers at the state and local level cannot conduct this war when they don’t know from one year to the next whether they are going to get the kind of support that Congress has already demon strated in the work that it has done,” Dukakis said. Before introducing Dukakis, CLEAT members held up a placard announcing the group had issued an “all points bulletin” for Bush, saying he is wanted for slashing support for state and local police, waving the white flag in the national war against drugs, giving criminals access to weapons and dealing with interna tional drug kingpins. Ron DeLord, CLEAT president, criticized Bush’s support for use of the death penalty. “We have the death penalty in Texas,” DeLord said. “Obviously, it won’t solve the nation’s problems, because it hasn’t solved our prob lems.” “We are not better off the we were eight years ago,” DeLord said. “We are at war, a guert ilia war without any resources and if they put Dan Quayle in charge of this — God help us.” Bentsen lauded Dukakis’ record on crime, saying the Massachusetts governor increased the number of officers on the police force, lowered the crime rate and attacked drug problems through an education ef fort in high schools. “You’ve seen this administration talk about substantial amounts of money going back to local law en forcement officials to fight the war against crime and then turn amid as soon as the new year startedi: try to keep those funds fromgotij down to the local enforcementoT cials,” Bentsen said. A private meeting with Hispari supporters that followed the dm conference was an “opportunitv discuss with him some of ourca cerns and recommendations, stale Sen. Carlos Truan, DO Christi. Store celebrates 50th anniversary PALESTINE (AP) — A down town landmark in this East Texas town, T he Jay Shop, will celebrate its 50th anniversary under the same management next month. That falls nine years short of Hazel Condos’ complete history with the clothing store. “I started with the store in 1929 when it was on Spring Street where Pacific Finance is today,” Condos said. Condos, 78, is part owner of The Jay Shop. When she went to work for the original owners at age 19, she was “salesgirl, janitor and everything else.” Robert Totah, whose father bought The Jay Shop in 1938, refers to Condos as his second mother. “This place has been her life really,” Totah said. Condos was born in Lebanon. At age 2, she arrived in Texas with her father, mother and a 1-month-old sister. Her family had relatives in Pales tine and her father opened a small store specializing in notions. In 1929, Wolf and Elke Kelfer opened The Jay Shop at its first loca tion on Spring Street.Jay was the middle name of a relative in the Kelfer family, Condos said. “The inventory was maybe three dozen dresses, the most expensive of which was SI6,” Condos said the only employee." The shop survived the Depres years because of the local oil boom the Tucker area. In 1931, the shop moved to 200 block of West Main Stref where, after numerous expansion it remains today. In 1938, the Totalis bought the Kellers “and took me inthete die,” Condos said. “The Lotahs are not my relativs but Bobby is like my ovvnson,”Cot dos said. “Some relatives don’tgt along that good.” The lotahs sell ready-to-wet clothing and began offering service such as alterations and fitters, said. The secret of The Jay Shop'slooj standing success has always beet good service, she said. That service has maintained Ik Jay Shop while oilier downtor businesses have died out or move: away to shopping centers. “When customers start coni! back, you know that you’ve actor plished something,” Condos said. Condos always lias been the key# The Jay Shop’s emphasis on semct Totah said. “She has a great rapport with» tomers,” Totah said. “She ato knows what they want.” ^ Freshmen Volunteers Needed e The Texas legislature passed a bill establishing the Texas Academic Skills Program that requires students entering college to take the TASP test beginning in 1989. The TASP test will also replace the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) for students in teacher education fields. Texas A&M University will be serving as a test site for the TASP test field trial on Tuesday, October 18. We need volunteers to represent TAMU in this state-wide field trial. The field trial will take approximately 11/2 to 2 hours. Two sessions will be held, one from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and the other form 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is no charge to participate in the field trial. The TASP test consists of three skills: Math, Reading, and Writing. Students who participate will have an opportunity to judge their mastery of academic skills and help the state of Texas develop the best possible test for colleges and universities. To participate in the TASP test field trial or for additional information, please call 845-0532.
