HOUSTON (AP) — The presi
dent of the financially strapped
Bluebonnet Bowl is appealing for
a sponsor to keep the 29-year-old
college football game alive.
The NCAA Post-Season Sub
committee extended an August
deadline to Oct. 9 for bowl offi
cials to find a sponsor and pay off
$400,000 in debts to former par
ticipants. The August deadline
was set after bowl officials failed
to meet a July deadline.
Bowl President A1 Warrington
says his committee is still dis
cussing possible sponsorships
with a few corporations and indi
viduals, but no firm commitments
have been received.
“This bowl really has become
an institution,” Warrington said.
“It has created a tremendous
amount of positive national pub
licity for the city of Houston, has
contributed millions to both par
ticipating schools and charities it
has supported, and has annually
been among the biggest single
events tourism-wise for the city of
Houston.
