SEOUL, South Korea (AP) —U.S.
boxers conjured memories of Mon
treal as they moved into the finals at
the Summer Olympics on Thursday,
filling the void left by Ben Johnson’s
alibi, U.S. basketball supremacy and
Carl Lewis’ golden grand slam.
Michael Carbajal of Phoenix,
Ariz., and Kennedy McKinney of
Killeen, Texas, became the first two
U.S. boxers into the finals, and five
more were knocking on the door af
ter making the quarterfinals.
Carbajal scored a 4-1 decision
over Robert Isaszegi of Hungary in
the 106-pound class, and McKinney
stopped Phajol Moolson of Thailand
in the first round of their 119-pound
bout.
Romallis Ellis of Ellenwood, Ga.,
lost a unanimous decision to An
dreas Zuelow of East Germany in the
132 pound semifinal, but he’ll get a
bronze medal as consolation. Still
lined up were Riddick Bowe, Ken
neth Gould, Roy Jones, Andrew
Maynard and Ray Mercer — waiting
to challenge the record of the fabled
seven who won five gold, one silver
and one bronze in 1976.
A doctor for the Canadian Centre
for Doping in Montreal, meanwhile,
revealed Wednesday that Johnson’s
male hormone levels were so low
when he won the 100 meters in
Seoul that it could only have been
from extended steroid use.
Johnson was stripped of the gold
medal when he tested positive for
steroids, but his agent had said the
sprinter was sabotaged by a stranger
with a bottle of “sport drink” con
taining a “gooey yellow substance”
that smelled bad.
The coordinator of doping con
trol here also said Johnson admitted
he took three medications, one of
them by injection, before his race.
One of them was a partially banned
corticosteroid which “could be suspi
cious,” Dr. Lee In-joon said.
The Soviet Union defeated the
United State 82-76 in their first
Olympic basketball meeting since
the controversy of 1972. The United
States now has lost only two of its 87
Olympic games, both to the Soviets.
And Lewis lost the 200 meters to
teammate and friend Joe DeLoach.
Lewis won the longjump and got the
100-meter gold when Johnson was
stripped for taking steroids. He still
has the 400-meter relay, but the best
he can do now is three gold, not four
like L.A.
On Thursday, a silver medal-win
ning weightlifter from Hungary be
came the eighth athlete caught using
drugs. Andor Szanyi, who finished
second in the 100-kilogram class,
tested positive for the same drug
Johnson used, stanozolol, and was
stripped of his medal.

Jones keeps on spiking enemy passes
IRVING, Texas (AP) — Ed “Too
Tall” Jones would have made a great

In his last nine NFL seasons with
the Dallas Cowboys, the 6-foot-9
Jones has batted down 73 enemy ae
rials from his left defensive end post.
Dallas didn’t keep records of batted
passes before then.
On three occasions, including
Danny Noonan’s 17-yard return in a
26-20 victory over the Atlanta Fal
cons on Sunday, the blocks have
been returned for touchdowns.
Jones, a first round draft pick in
1974, has never had the pleasure of
catching one and returning it him
self, although he came close against
the Falcons.
Dallas’ defensive co-captain batted
a Chris Miller pass into the air but
Jones couldn’t quite catch it before it
hit the artificial turf.

those passes into the air yet I haven’t
returned one for a touchdown my
self. It’s kind of ironic.”
His teammates kid him that he
would be too slow to score anyway.
Jim Jeffcoat, the right defensive
end, has returned two of Jones’
tipped passes for scores, both of
them against the New York Giants.
“Oh, Ed doesn’t have the speed to
score on one of those,” Jeffcoat said.
“That’s why he should leave it to
me.”
Jones is the Cowboys’ “iron man.”
He has never missed a game in his
14-year career.
When he lines up against New Or
leans on Monday night, it will be his
197th consecutive game.
“I just have a physical structure
that lets me come back from injury,”
Jones said. “I just have a body chem
istry that lets me take punishment
and shake it off.”
Somehow his body and his legs
have been able to hold up to the
pounding. The 35-year-old Jones
has a career 99‘A sacks to prove his
mobility.
“Some of them take shots at my
legs but I just dance around them,”
said Jones, who once unsuccessfully
tried professional boxing as a career.
How long can old bones Jones
keep going?
“I feel great, but you never know
how much longer you can go,” he
said. “I get excited more now than I
did when I was 25 years old looking
forward to game day Sundays.
