Brown Staff Writer Reactions to the penalties im posed by the NCAA Committee on Infractions on program vary campus. Most students and faculty inter viewed believe the team and Jackie Sherrill got what they deserved in being charged with 25 infractions, while some feel strongly that the pe nalties, especially the loss of the bowl game, were far too severe. Students and faculty were asked two questions: How appropriate do you think the penalities are? Do you think placing Jackie Sherrill on ad ministrative probation was too se vere, not severe enough or about right. The following are their responses. Mike Beatch, a May A&M grad uate with a degree in German, said of the penalities, “I really don’t think it’s that bad of a punishment for all the things we’ve done. We deserve what we. got, especially when you compare it to what other teams have gotten nailed on, we came out of it pretty good.” As for Sherrill’s probation, l think it’s about right. Maybe lie should lie stripped of his title as professor of athletics, but that’s it.” James Flores, a senior nuclear en gineering major, said, “I thought we got off very lucky — very, very lucky. I’m not upset with the out come at all. J ackie being put on pro bation is an appropriate penalty. Af- terall, rules were broken before he ever came to A&M.” J ennife %t<:o, tg clas ach ve; Health and Physical Educao Stabil partment, said, "I don't h: actors, what the mi rail ions include H12 ye ilrtimn-h ncided lo hat?|jAl so - judgment made, bet aim ystem 1 gram was not being runfairl, orseve I 'm glad it’s over with and nalties were handed out really know what should be anything, to Jackie Sherrill," Jud\ Franklin Hair, a sophomore elec trical engineering major, said, ”1 think anyone who violates the NCAA rules should be penalized. A&M violated the rules and they’re paying for it now.” The penalties are not as harsh as some schools have received, but based on the charges brought against them, I feel the penalties are fair. But Jackie got off easier than most coaches would have and I think it’s because of his reputation. He should consider himself very lucky.” Kirsten Berkken, a lecturer in the Liz Nage major, said, fair, especii taken away, caught and Other te; a 11 eshtnan [w " 1 he penalties Iv the IxjwI gat It’s a mailerol .e did." ms have made! The calls were to his mother and a (Continued from page 4) friend at the time. The gist is the coach acted improperly by hiding the kid out, and he didn’t.” 7. A recruit received money for work not completed and the wage was considered excessive (Kevin Murray). “I don’t have the record on that. That’s something we did not dispu te.” 8. A discount-rate car offered to a recruit by a booster with Sherrill’s knowledge. (Sherrill made no comment.) 9. Cash and lodgings provided for a recruit and his brother. “That was self-reported." Other violations: 2. Prospective student-athletes given football shoes. “Two young men came to campus and told two different stories. One said it did happen, the other said it didn’t.” 10. Sherrill and an assistant con tacted a recruit in person off campus more than the three times allowed by regulations. “That’s wrong. The assistant coach did not violate that code. That was the head coach that inadver tently walked into that kid.” 14. Athletes sold complimentary football tickets (self-reported). “That’s a problem everywhere.” 15. Inviting the father of two prospects to a luncheon (self-re ported). “That is not a violation, even though it’s in there. It was self-re ported as information, not as a viola tion.” mist; ike s a i id were not peni sevei rel> r. 1 think they "ere: on tl ic t i than lliev were« Sher rill it i ni glad he die any ' >vor se c] >f a penalty.” VV ay! and Mtxxly, a fresh j litica 1 s< ;ien ce major, said, the | >cn alti< *s A&M received; |>IO|: >ria te b lecause all thei rt was ; a si ap < >n the wrist and; ede themselves — i have be. en a i lot worse."
