In a prepared statement, Mobley on lid A&M would not make excuses illejiK ir mistakes made in the athletic JfArogiam. ill non “y e will not accept arguments ilootmutffl as ‘others are violating the or that ‘we don’t like the rul- i m [he said. n !iial,i?' “Where we differ with the rules, will seek constructive change ' hfough appropriate channels. We ^/ill,I however, abide by the rules as s ^ h e )|exist at any point in time.” viiti^iAcVM has 15 days to appeal the 3ca *' lecfion, but Mobley said the Uni- iaeT . ersiiy probably would abide by the all coi'lmBi lit tee’s restrictions. The 12-page report said the pe- yC^Sltles could have been worse than ol i/i /hat was actually dealt to the school. <^W' “The committee believes that j»W'resident Mobley’s actions provide a ^ asis for mitigating the penalties in his case. Absent President Mobley’s 1 hfl": actions, the penalties imposed on the University’s football program would have been more severe.” Mobley testified before the com mittee Aug. 13 in Syracuse, N.Y. In his testimony, he set out several points designed to “clean up” A&M’s athletic program, including the es tablishment of an intercollegiate ath letic compliance director, commu nication with former students on the school’s intent to dissociate them from the athletic program following NCAA recruiting violations and dis ciplinary actions against athletic de partment staff involved in the viola tions. Thirty-one allegations of rules vi olations and seven procedural viola tions were cited in the original letter from the NCAA. Nine of these were dropped at the hearing in Syracuse and four were self-reported. Eight of the charges were not ad dressed in the letter. The two unnamed assistant coaches found in violation of NCAA rules will have their contracts re viewed at the end of the season, and Sherrill has been placed on “admi nistrative probation.” Mobley said that in effect, he also is on administrative probation but would not say that either would leave automatically for any violation. Sherrill was more definitive than Mobley on the possibility of dis missal. “If Jackie Sherrill does something to warrant it, Jackie Sherrill will leave this institution,” he said. “Dr. Mobley won’t have to fire Jackie Sherrill.” Mobley said the main point of ad ministrative probation is to help re gain institutional control, which rests with the athletic director and the president. Several reports now will be filed through Robert Smith, vice presi dent for finance and operations, and Smith has been made an ex-officio member of the Athletic Council. As:-1 U ; .CSiOfs .
