Hun dreds were reported arrested and at least 19 people were hurt. Pinochet, who commands the army and took part in the selection process, had been widely expected to be nominated by his fellow military commanders. Pinochet announced that the ref erendum will be held Oct. 5. Anti-Pinochet demon st rations raged in Santiago and several cities where protesters hurled rocks, burned buses and clashed with po lice and Pinochet supporters. At 8 p.m., windows opened throughout Santiago and residents banged pots and pans to show their displeasure with the nomination. The noisy show of defiance was or ganized by a 16-party opposition co alition. A police spokesman, Capt. Alejan dro Sierra, said 19 people were in jured during the Santiago distur bances, which continued into the night and became increasingly vio lent. 1 wo polite olluets weic among the injured, one of whom was re ported in serious condition, Sierra said. He said police detained 364 pro testers who would be held overnight and then released. He said they included a U.S. citi zen, but said authorities would not release his name or that of any other people arrested. He said four public buses were set on fire and destroyed by demonstra tors, who also hurled rocks at police. There were brief clashes between groups of pro- and anti-Pinochet ci vilian groups. 1973,” Pinochet said in his accep tance speech. Pinochet led the bloody coup in September 1973 that ousted the gov ernment of Marxist President Salva dor Allende, who died in the palace takeover. If voters approve Pinochet, 72, his term will run until 1997. TI said the alliances are with workstation manufacturer Sun Mi crosystems Inc. of Mountain View', Calif., and chipmaker Cypress Semi conductor of San Jose, Calif. TI will use Sun’s SPARC, or Scala ble Processor Architecture chips, in future computer items and will de sign, manufacture, market and dis tribute SPARC chips worldwide. The Texas semiconductor giant also will produce the reduced in struction set chip, Cypress officials said. The RISC chip can process as many as 20 million instructions in a single second.
