Astros reclaim 2nd place _ JL| . . „ . r »- . to unretire on 9th-inning win in Frisco tor fifth time SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — According to Houston’s ace pitcher Mike Scott, San Francisco reliever Scott Gar- relts could have done a lot worse than throw the ball into the dirt on the pitch that cost the Giants the game. Easy for him to say, after the Astros won 3-2 Wednes day to take over sole possession of second place in the National League West. “If Garrelts had hung that pitch, it might have meant four runs instead of one,” said Scott, who won for the first time since 1985 at Candlestick Park. With home run threat Glenn Davis at the plate and two out in the ninth inning, Billy Hatcher scored on Garrelts’ low pitch, a slider which bounced over the screen behind home plate and into the seats. “It was just a bounce in our favor,” said Astro Man ager Hal Lanier, whose club won for the 17th time in the last 23 games. “It wasn’t exactly where I wanted to pitch it,” said Garrelts. “I wanted it hard, down and away.” San Francisco catcher Bob Melvin said, “I’m sup posed to block a ball like that, but it hit a hole in the dirt or maybe the plate — I don’t know — and bounced over my head.” Houston and San Francisco began the day tied for second, 4!/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, who played at night. Scott, 11-3, pitched five-hit ball for eight innings, striking out seven and walking none. Dave Smith re^ tired the side in order in the ninth for his 19th save. The winning rally began when Hatcher singled with one out. Garrelts walked pinch-hitter Terry Puhl and Rafael Ramirez flied out to center field, with Hatcher tagging and going to third. Garrelts then walked another pinch-hitter, Craig Reynolds, before facing Davis. The Giants took a 2-1 lead with an unearned run in the fifth and the Astros made it 2-2 with an unearned run in the sixth. The Astros could thank the sun for their run in the sixth. Young walked after first baseman Clark was semi- blinded and dropped a foul popup, took second on his 55th stolen base and scored on a two-out single by Ke vin Bass. Red Sox tie record for home wins BOSTON (AP) — Rookie Jody Reed singled home the tie-breaking run with two outs in the eighth in ning as the Boston Red Sox edged the Texas Rangers 5-4 Wednesday night for their 22nd consecutive home victory, tying the American League record set by the 1931 Phila delphia Athletics. The victory also broke Boston’s team record for the longest winning streak at home, set in 1949. Only two other major league clubs have longer home winning streaks this century. The 1916 New York Giants won 26 in a row and the 1978 Pitts burgh Pirates won 24 straight. Texas had come back for a 4-3 lead in the seventh when Pete Inca- viglia singled across the tie-breaking run after a two-run throwing error by relief pitcher Bob Stanley. The Red Sox tied the score in their half of the seventh and pushed across the winning run against Texas starter Bobby Witt, 3-7. With one out, Ellis Burks walked. After Todd Benzinger struck out, Burks stole second and Jim Rice was walked intentionally. Reed ran the count to 3-2, and then grounded a single through the hole to left, scor ing Burks.
