SO STAY Tw/E£> FOR THE LATEST NEWS AFFECT 1^6 THE V0RP CITY AREA... by Kevin Thom Victim’s son files lawsuit over mauling HOUSTON (AP) — The son of a Houston zoo keeper mauled to death by a tiger last month Filed a $6 million lawsuit Thursday alleging the city ignored safety problems that led to the death. “The city in this case was grossly negligent,” said Fred Hofheinz, at torney for Jack Tovar. “The city owes this man some money, and we’re going to get it.” Tovar, 35, of San Antonio, is the only child of Ricardo Tovar, 58, who was killed May 12 at the Houston Zoo as he was performing his morn ing duties caring for the tigers. A Si berian tiger broke through a glass security window, dragged the zoo keeper into the exhibit and mauled him, crushing his chest and breakig his neck. Named as defendants were the city, Mayor Kathy Whitmire, Parks Department Director Donald Olson and Houston Zoo Director John Werler, as well as CRS Sirrine Inc., the Firm that designed the large cat exhibit and W.J. Hessert Construc tion Co. Inc., which built it. Tovar’s lawsuit claims the city and other parties were “grossly neg ligent” in his father’s death in several respects. • After zoo employees arrived at the scene, they refused to shoot the tiger even when the animal attacked the zoo keeper again as he lay in the exhibit. • The window the tiger broke was made of thin glass that was not standard in most zoos, where spe cially strengthened glass or plastic commonly are used. • Tovar was required to work alone around dangerous animals be cause of staff shortages. • City officials, specifically Whit mire, Olson and Werler, supported cost-cutting measures at the zoo even though the cuts were known to be imprudent and resulted in unsafe conditions. Inhaled correction kills Round Rock teen ROUND ROCK (AP) — A teen ager has died as a result of inhaling typewriter correction fluid, a dan gerous practice that is growing in popularity as a way to get a “cheap high,” authorities said. Austin police officer Robert Mar tinez said he has confiscated correc tion fluid from about 30 youths so far this year. He seized most of the fluid after confronting gangs of youths late at night. In Round Rock, Armando Vala dez, 17, died early Wednesday, Jus tice of the Peace Jennifer Mattingly said. The death was ruled accidental. Assistant Police Chief Raymond Kuhlman said Valadez had been in haling typewriter correction fluid “for quite a lengthy time.” Travis County Medical Examiner Robert Bayardo, who performed the autopsy, said the cause of death was intoxication from volatile » stances. The fluid causes brain.: piratory and cardiac damage Officers found numerous i correction fluid containers near: victim's l>ody, Kuhlman said. nt, agree* qmne the n Antonio Sp ported Thu || But Brov Hawks to th : son, denied Hffer from t I The San Hnirces as s, Hrcepted d ■purs ov HcCombs i|ob Weiss c I The ne Rmrce dost He is “100 Brown has; ■ The sour Hiat Brown Hpeed to a Heal. UT students suffer attacks by squirrels AUSTIN (AP) — Students at tending summer session at the University of Texas in Austin have more than grades to worry about. An increase in the squirrel pop ulation on the 40-acre campus has become cause for concern, of ficials said Wednesday. Authorities believe the extra squirrel activity may be due to the mating season. UT Health Center spokesman Valerie Cox said an average of two squirrel attacks a week are be ing reported. But she said some attacks have happened while stu dents were feeding the animals, and the critters bit the human hands. ~BaUa lion file phoi A squirrel attempts to go under cover to attack an unsuspecting passerby. squirrels call the campus home. eol/eewj UT officials say at least 5,000 Editor’s note: An A.P. Beutel Health Center spokesmen says there have been no reports of squirrel bites or attacks at Texas A&M in the past month. The spokesman also said the squirrels probably were just doing what comes naturally nuts.
