Foundation to help teach about AIDS in Spanish EL PASO (AP) — The El Paso Conut!uiuty„EQundatiQn will match a $50,000 grant for educating Span ish-speaking youth about the dan gers of AIDS. “We are hoping to work with or ganizations that address the Span ish-speaking population and high- risk groups, especially young peo ple,” said Janice Windle, the founda tion’s executive director. AIDS is expected to become the leading cause of death among peo ple ages 20 to 35 in the next two to three years, she said. The grant is part of a multimil- lion-dollar national AIDS education and assistance program funded by the Ford Foundation and other phil anthropic organizations. Eight other areas across the country are taking part in program. The El Paso Community Founda tion will match the grant for a South west border states education pro gram, Windle said. It will work with local organizations, such as the Southwest AIDS Committee, the El Paso City-County Health District, the Hospice of El Paso and the La Fe Clinic, to plan the best use of the money, she said. The El Paso group will work with the California Community Founda tion and other foundations in Albu querque, N.M., Tucson, Ariz., Phoe nix, Ariz., and San Diego to coordinate how they will spend their $50,000 grants. “By working on AIDS funding, we’re hoping to make it safe for peo ple to step up and say they’re wor ried about this and will do their part,” Windle said. The partnership is designed to pool money from the Ford Founda tion, corporate donors and other philanthropic groups to help local organizations provide housing, day care, counseling and education for AIDS patients and their families. Beam, one of the defendants. Juror James A. Closser said there wasn’t enough evi dence to convict Beam, a former KKK grand dragon from Houston who was one of 13 defendants on trial recently in Arkansas. “I admire the man,” Closser, 67, of Van Buren, Ark., said of Beam during a telephone interview Monday with the Houston Chronicle. “I’ll guarantee you, it (the trial) was a mess.” But juror Archie L. Crawford had a different view of Beam. “Fd like to hang Beam, personally,” Crawford said. “But there wasn’t any evidence to convict him.” The 13 defendants were variously charged with sedi tious conspiracy, plotting to assassinate a federal judge and transportation of stolen money. Beam was charged only with seditious conspiracy, the violent overthrow of the U.S. government. The 12-member jury voted unanimously for acquit tal. Closser and Crawford said they and others agreed the federal government’s prime witness was a liar. “They just didn’t have anything on him (Beam),” Closser said. “I don’t think the man has done anything to go to jail for. People have a right to talk. This is a country where you have free speech.” Closser said Beam, 41, did a good job in court of de fending himself.
