Walk America to be held Saturday
By Kathy Crawford
Reporter
Walk America, an annual
fundraiser for the March of
Dimes, will take place Saturday
beginning at 9 a.m..
The 10-mile w'alk starts at Cen
tral Park in College Station, runs
along the East Bypass down
Southwest Parkway to Texas Ave
nue and back to the bypass.
Voncille Cassidy, the local di
rector of March of Dimes, said
parking will be available at the
Southwood Athletic Park and K
mart.
A shuttle bus will take partici
pants to Central Park.
This year is the 50th anniver
sary for Walk America.
Linda Storms, local chairman
for Walk America, said the goal is
to raise $25,000.
“It (the money) is for research
to find ways to fight birth de
fects,” Storms said. “There are
over 3,000 birth defects, so it
takes a lot of money . The goal in
the very beginning was to find a
cure for polio.”
Cassidy said the grand prize
for the individual or team raising
$1,000 or more is a catered din
ner for four.
A night at the Hampton Inn
will be given to those raising $600
to $999.
Jazz Fest to swing
By Page Goodman
Reporter
The fifth annual Jazz Fest will
bring a variety of modern, big
band and blues jazz to College
Station Saturday from noon to
11:45 p.m. at Central Park.
The festival, sponsored by the
College Station Parks and Recre
ation Department, will feature
Texas artists and local bands, in
cluding: the Bryan High School
Jazz Band, Don Pope & Friends,
the A&M Consolidated Jazz Band
and the Texas A&M Jazz Band.
The Mady Kaye Quintet from
Austin and the North Texas State
University 1 o’clock Lab Band
from Denton also will be per
forming.
Admission is $2 per person
and $5 per family, said Tracy
Hinton, public relations and ad
vertising director for the Fest.
Sheila Walker, program super
visor at the parks and recreation
department, said there is not a
particular theni£ for the festival
because the planners wanted to
encourage variety.
“We want each band to play
what they want to play,” Walker
said. “That way we will hear a va
riety of jazz. North Texas State
University and A&M Consol
idated will play a lot of modern
and big band jazz. Mady Kaye is
more blues-type jazz.”
In addition to the music, there
will be other activities throughout
the day, including hot-air balloon
rides, local arts and crafts booths
and food booths.
Hinton said that although no
Those whose donations total
$200 to $399 will receive a Walk
man radio while a T-shirt will be
iven to anyone who raises $50 to
99.
Also, there will be a prize for
the most creative T-shirt.
Participants are entered on an
individual or team basis.
Several companies have large
teams while others consist of only
two people.
Storms said there will be seve
ral rest stops along the course of
the walk. Participants can stop at
Tenneco, Wendy’s and the park
at the police station among other
places.
There will be different activ
ities at each rest stop. Storms said.
One will include a local
cheerleading group.
“We hope to make each rest
stop something different and ex
citing,” Storms said. “We’re hop
ing to make our walk fun for peo
ple.”
She said anyone interested in
participating in the walk should
contact the March of Dimes office
at 846-3470. Also, volunteers are
needed to help with registration
and rest stops.
Storms said she is hoping for
clear weather on the day of the
event.
“We’ll have it (the walk) unless
it’s thundering and lightning.”

alcohol will be served, this year
people may bring a cooler. A
shuttle will run from Southwood
Valley to Central Park from 8
p.m. to midnight.
Walker said, “We highly rec
ommend this because it will be
crowded. Last year attendence
neared 2,500.”
Awards from Walk America —
a walk sponsored by March of
Dimes to prevent birth defects —
will be given at the festival
around 3 p.m.. Walker said.
It should be a fun, eventful day
for everyone if the weather is
beautiful, Walker Said.
“If it is just raining, we won’t
call it off, because there are
tents,” Walker Said. “However, if
the weather is threatening, there
will be announcements about
canceling the event on all radio
stations.”
