David Baranski, a senior electrical tngineering technology major from iryan, won the GM scholarship and Dana Martin, a junior from Neder- and, received the GMAC schol- rship. Martin said being contacted about winning was the answer to all her prayers. “Over spring break I was going to have to get a loan from my grandparents,” she said. The winners became eligible for the drawing by completing a form at the Auto Expo. They will receive a $500 grant toward their tuition. The number of entries for the three-day event was estimated to be over 4,000, which breaks this year’s record for entries on other cam puses the expo has visited, GM rep resentative Hector Tovar said. Alternates were drawn in case one of the winners became ineligible. The alternates were Laura Rabun, a senior from Menard, and Christian Chrane, a freshman from Plano. GM representatives comple mented the event’s local sponsor, the Intramural Recreation Department. “We were really impressed with the Intramural facilities,” said Ber- nie Johnston, GM manager of sales promotion from Detroit. Before announcing the winners, Tovar thanked the Scheduling Of fice, the Intramural Department and the students who helped with the event. The winners will receive their checks by mail in about four weeks. ollege staff stung by reneged pledge : DALLAS (AP) — Bishop College, stung by a man who reneged on a '‘300,000 pledge and caught in a eb of debt, may lose its bankruptcy ourt protection if it fails to meet its ayroll Thursday, a federal official ays. Levi Watkins, interim president of he 106-year-old college, said he on’t know until Thursday if the ayroll can be met. Faculty and staff ave gone nearly two months with utbeing paid. f ,nV ‘ n h ce£ , Judith Swift, attorney for faculty ul whe: and staff creditors, said some admin- :ationhtrators, including Watkins, have em P-libeen receiving cash advances whde /leteo«*r ; Meteord es y is everf nt, in* there’s r tieoneis 1 instructors have not been paid since Jan. 22. Watkins told the Associated Press on Wednesday that was a “line of propaganda” and a “matter of inter pretation.” “I have some emergency cases, yes,” he said. “Emergencies of evic tion, loss of home, medicine, yes. Anybody who works down here and has an emergency.” If the college fails to pay faculty Thursday, the U.S. bankruptcy trustee may seek action to dismiss the school’s Chapter 11 reorganiza tion petition. Such a move would subject Bishop to lawsuits from its 400 creditors, owed $12.5 million. U.S. Bankruptcy Trustee George McElreath has filed a court motion asking that Bishop’s reorganization case be dismissed. A hearing was originally set for April 8, but McElreath has said he would ask U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert McGuire to speed up the hearing on his motion if Bishop fails to pay its faculty. The state attorney general’s office said it will contact federal authorities to see whether they are interested in investigating the man whose founda tion promised Bishop $300,000 then reneged on the donation.
