Big Event organizers plan a day of service for local area By Ronnie Calhoun If you like to clean, paint or just want to help out the Bryan- College Station community, the Student Government needs you. Texas A&M University Student Government will sponsor the Big Event on March 5 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Big Event is a one-day event in which students go out and do jobs requested by the Bryan-College Station community. Debbie Massey, committee chairman and a junior education major, says the Big Event focuses on providing a service for the area. “The event was introduced to do something for the Bryan- College Station area and to put something back into the community where we go to school,” she says. Massey says at least 3,000 students are expected to participate. “This year’s turn out will be larger than last year’s but not as big as the first year’s,” she says. “We expect students from the Corps, fraternities, sororities, dorm groups and individuals. ” Massey says Student Government contacted the major organizations and businesses in the community to see what services they needed. When individuals called for work to be done, they were asked to fill out a job request form. On the form the individuals were asked to estimate the number of people that would be required to do the job requested. A 19-member committee then took all the job request forms and decided how many people were necessary for each job. “We will clean, paint or whatever they want to be done,” Massey says. Last year the committee did yardwork for schools and elderly people and also visited nursing homes. Stephaine Bandy, a junior anthropology major, says last year activities also included cleaning churches, doing minor house repairs and washing busses for the local schools. “We also went into Bryan- College Station parks to pick up the garbage,” she says. Redig says the Big Event committee plans on going to local nursing homes and will talk and visit with the patients. “We will go to the Boy’s Club and take care of the children for the afternoon,” she adds.
