Page 4/The Battalion/Friday, February 26, 1988 Man opens fire on UH campus, wounds three HOUSTON (AP) — A man taken into custody at a college dormitory opened fire at the University of Houston-Downtown early Thurs day, wounding two campus police officers and a maintenance worker, authorities said. Thursday afternoon police were continuing to search for the man, who wrestled a .357-caliber revolver from one of the officers, Houston police spokesman Dan Turner said. The suspect, believed to be a 28- year-old student, apparently is the same person arrested Wednesday for allegedly fighting with a former roommate at the dorm. The man was released from the Harris County Jail later Wednesday, officials said. “He returned to the dorm and started making threats,” university spokesman Martha Cantu said. “I think (the threats) were in general.” There were conflicting reports as to what time the student was first taken into custody. University spokesman Andy Gomez said it was about 2:30 a.m Thursday, but Cantu said the student may have been taken into custody late Wednesday night. “He evidently was (in the main building) for a while,” Cantu said, adding that the shootings occurred after a UH-Downtown officer tried to handcuff the suspect. Five injured by gunman at rest home ARLINGTON (AP) — A former retirement home resident armed with two rifles burst into a board meeting at the home Thursday and opened fire, wounding four people and sending a fifth into cardiac ar rest, authorities said. The gunman fled from the room at the Masonic Home for the Aged with one rifle tied around his neck with twine, but surrendered peace fully moments later, Arlington po lice spokesman Dee Anderson said. Four people suffered minor gun shot wounds in the shooting at the home shortly after 11 a.m., he said. A fifth person, Willie Joe Wright, 67, suffered a heart attack and was in critical condition at Arlington Me morial Hospital, hospital spokesman Tenya Woods said. The other shoot ing victims were in fair cbttdition, she said. “Apparently, they had a board meeting and one former resident, who was apparently disgruntled, walked into the board room and started shooting at the 15 to 16 peo ple gathered there,” Anderson said. The assailant, a man in his late 70s or early 80s, had lived at the home for about three years and was aware of the time frame of the monthly board meeting. He had been evicted or asked to leave the home some time ago, Anderson said. Sunset Today: 6:21 p.m. Sunrise Saturday: 6:53 a m.
