The world’s most authentic
replica of the original 17th
century Globe Theater in
London can be found no
where else but in Texas.
Odessa, a West Texas town
about 350 miles southwest of
Dallas with a population of
over 100,000 people, not only
houses this world renowned
theater but it is also the setting
for the 20th annual Texas
Shakespeare Festival.
The festival, featuring
performances by the National
Shakespeare Co., The Globe
and Odessa College theater
groups and the Texas Christian
University theater department,
begins Feb. 18 and will
continue through March 12.
“Julius Caesar” and “Two
Gentlemen from Verona” are
the Shakespeare plays that will
be featured in the festival, says
David Weaver, executive
director of the Globe Theatre
and executive producer of the
Shakespeare Festival. Also
scheduled is a non-
Shakespearean show, “The
Music Man.”
“We (the acting company
sponsored by the Globe
Theatre) produced this
ourselves in order to broaden
the appeal of the festival by
attracting a wider audience, ”
Weaver says.
“The Music Man” will be
presented Feb. 25-27 and
March 4-6 with one show each
night.
“Julius Caesar, ” performed
by the National Shakespeare
Co., will open the festival on
Feb. 18,19 and 20 with an
afternoon and evening
performance each day.
Seats for the opening
weekend will be $9 for adults
and $6.75 for students and
senior citizens. However, seats
for the remaining performances
will be only $8 for adults and
$5.50 for students and senior
citizens.
The prices differ due to the
differences in the cost of
bringing the shows to this area,
Weaver says.
Closing the festival will be
the T.C.U. theater
department’s performance of
“Two Gentlemen from
Verona” on March 10-12.
Recognized and promoted
by the Tourism Division of the
Texas Department of
Commerce, the festival offers
an atmosphere which sets it
apart from other cultural
events, Weaver says.
“We are recognized by
scholars and architects for the
architecture and atmosphere,”
Weaver says. “The Tutor look
and feel run throughout the
complex; unlike other replicas
which carry the theme only in
the main house or hallways but
not both.”
The purpose of the festival is
to offer Shakespeare’s plays in
a unique and authentic setting
in order to promote a new or
deeper appreciation for the
arts, he says.
“Watching the reactions of
the audience as they make the
transition from the dreadful
duldrum feelings that surround
Shakespeare’s works to
feelings of excitement and
enthusiasm... is makes the
whole thing worthwhile,”
Weaver says.
A successful season is
expected since five of the first
six shows have been sold out
for two weeks, he says.
Reservations can be made
through the ticket office
Monday through Thursday
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on
show days from 9 a.m. to 8
p.m. The ticket office will hold
reserved tickets until the
specific performance begins.
