If a student was in the top ten percent of his high school class, tnere is no minimum SAT score. But if the student was in the first quarter of his class, he must score at least a 1000 on the test to be automatically admitted to the Uni versity. The SAT requirement in creases as the student’s class rank de- Students who do not meet the au tomatic admission requirements are put in a “special evaluation” category if they meet a second set of criteria. The lowest SAT score acceptable in this category is 800, and only if the student was in the top quarter of his high school class. So for students who rank below the top ten percent of their high school classes, the absolute mini mum SAT score acceptable for ad mission to A&M is an 800f And the minimum SAT required for schol arship athletes is 700. “We have denied admission to an athlete when we were unaware that he was talking to a coach and had been promised a scholarship,” Lay says. “We had to go back and undo what was done. We hope the athlete will indicate on his application that he is going to be a scholarship ath lete, or the coach will tell us about him so we don’t have this mix-up.” The maximum number of stu dents who can be admitted to A&M for Fall 1988 is 6,600 students. If there is still room in the freshman class after students are admitted au tomatically, applicants in the second category are evaluated on a case-by case basis. But scholarship athletes are included in the 6,600-maximum enrollment, Lay says. This means that it’s possible that a scholarship athlete with a SAT score in the 700s could be admitted to A&M in the place of another student who scored in the 900s. Housing is another bonus athletes enjoy. But Dr. Steve Crews, Cain Hall supervisor, says students have many misconceptions about the ath letic dormitory. “I heard one story that the bath room floors in here were heated so the athletes wouldn’t have to walk on cold tile,” he said. “That’s ridicu lous.” The rooms are a foot wider each way than the modular dorm rooms, and they are furnished with two chairs, two beds and two desks. They are carpeted with a material similar to the indoor/outdoor carpeting in modular dorms. “People think they’re gold-plated, but they’re just like any other dorm,” Crews said. “The food is super, but you have to keep in mind that they are preparing food for a smaller number of students than Sbisa or the Commons.” The Cain Hall cafeteria prepares food according to a training diet that is based on specifications given by the trainers, Crews said. Another of Cain Hall’s conve niences is the parking lot alongside the dorm. The 177-space lot is re served for residents of Cain Hall. Bob Wiatt, director of University Police, said the parking lot was built along with Cain Hall as part of one construction project funded by (he Athletic Department. “They built the building and the parking lot as a package,” Wiatt said. “It wasn’t funded by regular parking revenue. We didn’t pay anything.” But the lot is patrolled by the Uni versity Police and belongs to the University, he said. The athletes have a special overlay on their red parking permit that al lows them to park only in the Cain Hall parking lot. The permit costs $66, the same price as a regular red parking permit, Wiatt said. “They come and buy a parking sticker just like any other student,” he said. “We have a list of Cain Hall residents, and after identifying them as a resident, we assign a PA39 over lay for their red permit.” Cain Hall houses male athletes; about 85 percent of its 200 residents are on athletic scholarship, Crews said. “This dorm was built to house scholarship athletes,” Crews said. Panel aims to ease tension in Dallas after officer’s death DALLAS (AP) — The head of a new commission said Tuesday the immediate goal of the panel is to re duce racial tension that flared after police officer John Chase was shot by a mentally ill homeless man. Tom Dunning, an insurance exec utive who has served on a number of state and city panels, was appointed Tuesday by Dallas Mayor Annette Strauss to head Dallas Together, a panel of civic and religious represen tative that will advise the city councif After the Jan. 23 shooting, Police Chief Billy Prince said City Council members’ criticism of the depart ment’s deadly force policy and relationship with minorities had set the stage for potential violence. Prince will be asked to serve on the commission, along with business leaders, ministers and minority lead ers, Strauss said. “The people in our community, have not been communicating very well,” Strauss said. “The lack of com munication is causing polarization and we can’t have that in our city.” Dunning, 45, said the immediate goal is to reduce racial tension. “Our long-term goal is to create a situation where community and business lead ers throughout Dallas can work to gether for Dallas’ constructive growth.” Dallas Together will address problems outlined in a recent three- year sttidy commissioned by the civic group Dallas Alliance. The study cited a growing polarity between whites and blacks and said poverty, crime, lack of decent low-income housing, school dropouts and lack of, opportunity prevented blacks and Hispanics from achieving economic liberation in the city. The commission was prompted by tensions that erupted after Chase, who was white, was shot to death by a black man, who was later killed in a shootout with pursuing officers. In other developments, the police department announced Monday it would continue indefinitely its two- officer patrols. The move was prompted by Prince as a precaution after the slay ings of Chase and another officer last month.
