WarCon '88 to provide fun, games
by Cindy Milton
MSC Nova has planned
more than its annual weekend
of fun and games during
WarCon ’88 Febmary 5, 6,
and 7 at the Memorial Student
Center.
The highlight of WarCon '88
is a speech on Naval Tensions
in the Persian Gulf by Larry
Bond, co-author of the best
selling novel Red Storm Rising
and designer of Harpoon, a
new game of naval combat
simulation.
Bond, who has served in the
armed forces and designed
several anti-warfare models
and tactical action gaming
systems, is the first speaker
ever in WarCon history.His talk
will be held Saturday at 2 p.m.
in 601 Rudder Tower.
Admissionfor the talk is free.
Nova, the University’s
wargaming committee, has
been active at A&M since the
early 1970s. WarCon ‘88 is the
organization’s fourteenth
WarCon, which makes it the
oldest wargaming convention
in the state.
Nova presents two
wargaming conventions —
cons, for short —each year,
WarCon and NovaCon. The
committee also has open
gaming every weekend so
gamers can find new
opponents and interests.
Paul Hart, a senior computer
science major and chairman of
Nova, said the convention
brings together people from
around the state who are
interested in gaming
competition with other serious
gamers.
“We have games like
advanced Dungeons and
Dragons, Starfleet Battle ...
games that will simulate
combat in the past, present,
future and in fantasy time
periods,” he says.
Hart says the games include
role-playing games, where
participants take on another
character, and board games,
where the players compete to
see who’s the most skillful
player.
Hart says the games that will
be played at WarCon are not
typically found in stores.
However, he says there is a
“dealer’s room” at the
convention where these types
of games, books and comics
will be sold.
WarCon ’88 will include a
grenade toss, with inactive
World War II grenades, and a
video room with additional
games.
Mark Camp, a senior history
major and head of the WarCon
dealer’s room, says most of the
games involve some kind of
strategy.
“The games teach you how
to think ahead,” he says.
“They teach you a lot of
history.”
Camp says games like
Harpoon are modem and
relevant, with fictitious conflict.
“Some of the modem
games are very accurate,” he
says. “They could be played in
other places in the world. You
learn to be a technician.
“The whole thing is very
stimulating. You learn about
strategy, history, and you meet
people who are interested in
the same things you are. ”
Tickets for Warcon ’88 are
$11 for the weekend. They can
be purchased in 206 MSC or
through Ticketron at the MSC
box office.
All movies and times are provided by the
theaters, and are subject to change.
