ROUND ROCK (AP) — Charges
lere filed against 22 people follow-
riga four-month drug investigation
It Round Rock Westwood High
chool in which an ^undercover of f i
ler purchased cocaine, methamphe-
tamines, marijuana and LSD, a pros-
cutor said.
Williamson County District Attor-
ey Ken Anderson said the investi-
ation targeted people who peddle
rugs to students.
“It’s important, when the oppor
tunity arises, to focus our efforts on
rosecuting dealers, particularly
lealers we know are selling to
chool-age children,” Anderson said.
He said the illegal drugs were
arr(!®>urchased by a female undercover
oms oi 11
in Dell
rid the 1
her'scaf
ed'
ifficer, who posed as a student.
Anderson said the probe had the
ooperation of school principal Nor-
nan Sansom. It started shortly after
chool opened last fall and was the
irst in Williamson County aimed at
nt’s d 11 teople who peddle drugs to high-
He chool students.

A total of 30 felony drug charges
were filed against 22 people in Wil
liamson and Travis counties, includ
ing five juveniles.
Sansom praised the effort, saying,
“We zeroed in on the pushers.”
“We have five pushers who have
been taken off this campus, at least
temporarily,” Sansom, who an
nounced the arrests over the school’s
public address system, said.
“This is another nail, another
prong in our attack to keep pushers
away,” Sansom said. “We wall do any
thing to pressure them, to make it
uncomfortable to operate. You do
everything you possibly can, then
you hope and pray.”
It was the second undercover op
eration in just over "a year in w'hich
an undercover officer infiltrated an
Austin-area school to buy drugs.
A similar investigation at Austin’s
Crockett High School in December
1986 resulted in charges against 35
people who sold drugs to an officer
posing as a student.
Authorities said the locations
where Westwood students went to
purchase drugs included a home in
Round Rock and a residence near
the University of Texas campus in
Austin. Anderson said six people
who frequented the UT-area resi
dence were charged with selling LSD
and methamphetamines.
Anderson said the investigation
was prompted by a raid last year that
revealed evidence of drug sales to
students at Westwood.
Another episode that prompted
the lengthy investigation took place
two yeaxs ago, w hen authorities ar
rested the parents of a 13-year-old
after a bag of marijuana was confis
cated from the youth.
The youngster told law officers,
“What’s the big deal? My dad has it
all over the house,” Andexson said.
“It made us aware of the diff erent
ways drugs get into the schools,” Axx-
derson said.

AUSTIN (AP) — A Nixon man
|yas in jail Tuesday after the body of
a 2-year-old girl was found in a shal-
grave when the child’s dis
traught mother led officers to the
sile.
Authorities said they were alerted
to the situation when the child’s
randfather received a telephone
in Louisiana late Sunday from
|is daughter, who told him Andrea
Nicole Garcia was buried near a mo-
ice dff| |el where she and her boyfriend
were living.

homicide investigators said.
Jerry Saldana, 25, of Nixon, iden
tified as the woman’s boyfriend, was
being held in the Travis County Jail
in lieu of $100,000 bond after being
charged with murder, police said.
The child’s mother, Anita Garcia,
w-as not charged. She was questioned
and released, police said.
Travis County Medical Examiner
Dr. Robert Bayardo said an autopsy
showed that the child died of two
blows to the head and one to the ab
domen. The girl also had numerous
scrapes and bruises. The body was
wrapped in several baby blankets, he
said.
Authorities said they believe An
drea suffered the fatal beating Jan.
23, and Bayardo said she died within
24 hours. She was buried within 48
hours of her death, police said.
“We do not believe the mother
was involved in the fatal beating.
Her involvement was biought about
by her fear of the suspect, who had
beaten her before. That is one rea
son why she did not report it,” Slat-
ton said.
Authorities said Garcia and Sal
dana had been living together for
two months before the death of the
little girl. She and the baby’s father
are divorced, they said.
