DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) —
Iowa’s largest-circulating daily
newspaper on Sunday endorsed
Republican Bob Dole and Demo
crat Paul Simon in the state’s Feb.
8 presidential caucuses.
The Des Moines Register, in
departing from a tradition of not
endorsing candidates before the
caucuses, gave its approval to the
two senators from nearby Mid
western states and explained its
decision to make the unusual en

by editor James P. Gannon.
No other large Iowa daily so
far has endorsed candidates in
the precinct presidential seleciKb co
process, which provides the fiislfd
test for presidential candidates les.
The Register said that while'Wty

Mercy-killing article sparks protest
CHICAGO (AP) — A young
physician who wrote an essay de
scribing a decision to inject a
deadly dose of morphine into a
terminally ill patient has been
condemned by colleagues who
called the action unethical and il
legal.
A gynecology resident told
how he ended the life of a 20-
year-old cancer patient in an arti
cle titled, “It’s Over, Debbie,” in a
recent issue of the Journal of the
American Medical Association.
“It was a gallows scene, a cruel
mockery of her youth and unful
filled potential,” wrote the
cian, who said he had never seet
the patient before the night k
ended her life. “Her only word!
to me were, ‘Let’s get this ovfl

The Chicago-based journal bi l
received a flood of letters protesi

Lundberg, the magazine’s editor
Lundberg and his staff belien
— but have not confirmed —tbsi
the essay is based on an actual
event. The doctor’s name and
hospital were withheld at his re
quest.
Sandinista captive reunited with famili
CARLINVILLE, Ill. (AP) —
James Denby, reunited with his
family Sunday after seven weeks
in a Nicaraguan prison, said his
captors repeatedly urged him to
speak out against the Reagan ad

Contra rebels.
“I told them I was a lifelong
Republican, and that was the
wrong thing to tell them,” said
Denby, who denied charges that
he helped the Contra rebels.
Denby said he believes his re
lease was intended by the Nicara
guan government to influentf
this week’s U.S. House vote on
aid to the Contras trying to topplt
the leftist Sandinista regime.
He said he was asked repeal

Contra aid, but declined.
“In Nicaragua, they feti
