Pernell Dale Bratcher, 22, was ar rested Wednesday after about 45 hours of freedom when Bexar County sheriffs deputies tracked him down and found him hiding un der a bed in a mobile home. Bratcher was on trial for the slay ing of his girlfriend, Debora Sue Cotton, 19, whose decomposed body was found in a Christmas tree box last May 7. “I’m innocent,” Bratcher told re porters Wednesday as he was es corted to the county jail. Bratcher said he fled because he feared the racial makeup of the 12- member jury, which had only one Hispanic and one black. “I wasn’t going to let 12 people decide my life,” he said. “There were too many white people.” Shortly after Bratcher fled Mon day, the jury convicted him and later sentenced him to life in prison.
