Skins hope to outscore Elway, Broncos Sunday GET READY FOR THE SUPER BOWL at "Slip into the Bay" Open all Day Sunday "Slip in for an IGLOO Daquirt 846-1816 4501 Wellborn Rd. Between AStM St Villa Maria SAN DIEGO (AP) — Richie Pe- titbon answered the question with the patience of someone who has been listening for more than 30 years in pro football. “No,” said Washington’s defensive coordinator, he didn’t expect the Redskins would get the eight sacks on Denver’s John Elway in Sunday’s Super Bowl that they got on Minne sota’s Wade Wilson in the NFC championship game. “I don’t mean to say this the wrong way,” Petitbon said. “Wade Wilson’s a good quarterback. But he’s not in the same class with John Elway.” Thus the questions: How can the Redskins keep Elway from dodging and dancing and put ting up somewhere between 27 and 40 points, as he has done almost all season? In shorthand, how do you play D on the E? The answer: You don’t. You try to outscore him. “You know going in that he’s going to be on the move,” said Charles Mann, who with Dexter Manley presents Elway with as quick a defensive end tandem as he has faced in his five NFL seasons. “We know for sure that our tongues are going to be hanging out chasing him.” Players described Wednesday’s workout as one of the hardest- hitting ever. “Guys were getting hit out of bounds,” Mann said. “I mean, those were our own teammates. One common method of con taining Elway is the “spy” system — assigning a defender, usually a line backer, to shadow Elway and then attack when the elusive quarterback breaks out of the pocket. The objec tive: to bring him down or make him hurry his pass. Although Petitbon and Head Coach Joe Gibbs were not tipping their hand, that is not likely to hap pen Sunday. “A lot of teams do it,” Gibbs said. “The problem with it is that it takes a man out of your defense, either out of the pass coverage or out of your pass rush? What Washington is more likely to do is to use its size advantage over the Denver offensive line to pressure Elway and keep him in the pocket rather than give him the five or six seconds he gets when he scrambles. That usually allows Mark Jackson, Ricky Nattiel, Vance Johnson or Steve Sewell to shake free downfield. The Redskins also have the ad vantage of using a four-man line, an alignment Denver sees little of in the AFC, where the 3-4 is prevalent. One possibility is to use the speed of Manley and Mann to contain El way outside and hope that 295- pound Dave Butz and 270-pound Darryl Grant can overpower 265- pound guards Stefan Humphries and Keith Bishop to keep him from shooting up the middle. The Broncos’ smallish defense has worn down in their last two big games, surrendering 30 points to the New York Giants in the second half of last year’s Super Bowl and 28 to the Browns in the 38-33 AFC title game The Economist February 2,1988/Texas A&M University MSC GREAT ISSUES ECONOMICS SYMPOSIA PRESENTS: DUDLEY FISHBURN February 2, 7:30 pm Rm. 201 MSC Free /MSC GREAT ISSUE Executive Editor rV-W- Villa Maria Bank Fetal Latcli Florist lal l auTiT 707 Texas Ave. 696-6713 All major cards accepted by telephone HOT PIZZA 846-8268 Lunch Special n)** 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Daily 12” 3 topping pizza FREE DELIVERY lain Dinner Delight 846-8268 12” two topping pizza SS 95 16” two topping pizza $7 9i FREE DELIVERY Emilio’s Pizza ■ Emilio’s Pizzai Sigma Iota Epsilon National Honorary Management F rater nit y Information Session February 1, 1988 7:00 p.m, Blocker 134 j All Candidates Invited MSC Cepheid Variable regrets that: Star Trek's Creator Gene Roddenberry has cancelled due to sudden unavailability REFUNDS AVAILABLE AT PURCHASE LOCATION Valentine Personals Put Your Heart On the Line in our Valentine Love Lines Section to be pu For $5 special.
