(AP) — Kartsas Sen. Bob Dole is
gaining ground on Republican pres
idential hopeful George Bush, and
Gary Hart is falling fast as the Dem
ocratic front-runner, a poll of na
tionwide voters released Wednesday
indicates.
In the GOP race, Bush remains
the solid front-runner, but chief ri
val Dole has gained on him in recent
weeks, according to a Gallup Poll
conducted for the Houston Post and
Dallas Times Herald.
Bush’s lead over Dole among
likely Republican voters was 45 per
cent to 30 percent, a 15-point advan
tage compared to the 25-point edge
the vice president held in Novem
ber.
Running a distant third was Pat
Robertson, who was favored by 8
percent.
Rounding out the field of Repub
lican hopefuls were New York Rep.
Jack Kemp with 5 percent, and for
mer Delaware Gov. Pete du Pont
and former Secretary of State Alex
ander Haig, each with 2 percent.
pm KAPPA SIGMA
The difference among those at
the bottom of the pack is relatively
insignificant since the poll’s margin
of error is plus or minus 5 percent.
The poll surveyed 538 likely Re
publican voters and 560 likely Dem
ocratic voters by telephone Friday,
Saturday and Sunday.
On the Democratic side, although
former Colorado Sen. Hart immedi
ately jumped to the top of the polls
when he re-entered the race in De
cember, his support has dropped 25
percent since then, the survey
found.
In contrast, Massachusetts Gov.
Michael Dukakis’ strength has risen
dramatically to overtake the Rev.
Jesse Jackson for second place in the
Democratic sweepstakes, according
to the poll. Missouri Rep. Richard
Gephardt also moved up in the sur
vey.
The poll also showed many voters
are having second thoughts about
Hart’s born-again candidacy after a
five-month hiatus caused by his asso
ciation with Miami model Donna
Rice.
In a national Gallup Poll in De
cember, Hart was the preferred can
didate of 31 percent of likely Demo
cratic voters. In this week’s poll,
Hart maintained his front-runner
status, but he was the choice of only
23 percent.
Following Hart in this week’s poll
was Dukakis with 16 percent and
Jackson with 15 percent. Gephardt
and Illinois Sen. Paul Simon each
had 9 percent, trailed by Tennessee
Sen. A1 Gore with 6 percent and for
mer Arizona Gov. Bruce Babbitt
with 4 percent.
Eighteen percent of likely Demo
cratic voters said they still were un
decided.
In the November poll, Bush had a
47-22 lead over Dole. In April, his
lead was 34-18.
The lower numbers for both men
in April reflected the 26 percent
who were undecided at the time. In
November, the undecided factor was
down to 15 percent. In the latest
poll, it was down to 8 percent.
Robertson, a former television
evangelist, has risen from 4 percent
in April to 7 percent in November
and 8 percent this week.
In contrast, Kemp’s standing
dropped from 9 percent to 5 percent
and Haig’s has dropped from 7 per
cent to 2 percent. Du Pont’s support
has remained stable at about 2 per
cent.

Map Discussion: A surface front and upper-level low pressure system should
generate rain from central California through the Canadian border today. The
front and low pressure system will be diminishing tonight as the upper level
dynamics will be dampened by a developing pattern aloft to the north of the
border. The continental United States will be spared the onslaught of arctic air for
the present as the upper-level flow becomes more zonal (from west to east).
The high pressure system in the Eastern United States will keep New Englar:
through the Mid-Atlantic states unseasonably cool.
Forecast:
Today through Friday. Fair with mild to warm days and cool nights. The high
temperature today will reach 66 degrees. The low temperature Friday morning*' |
be in the low 40s, with a high temperature Friday near 70 degrees. Winds willbe
light from the south throughout the period.
Weather Fact Ozone layer — the general stratum of the upper atmosphere in
which there is an appreciable ozone concentration and in which ozone plays an
important part in the radiative balance of the atmosphere. Maximum concentrato|
of ozone occurs at about 20 to 25 km.
