Ferdinand nips Theatrical for Horse of Year NEW YORK (AP) — Ferdinand, who beat Alysheba in a battle of Kentucky Derby winners in the $3 million Breeders' Cup Classic, was named 1987 Horse ol the Yeai Wednesday. Theatrical finished second in the voting, width was .is close as Ferdi nand’s nose victory in the ( lassie last fall. Ferdinand and I heatrical fin ished 1-2 in \oting by the writers and trackmen of the Daily Racing Form and racing set retai ies from member tracks of the Thoroughbred Racing Associations. I heatrical, a grass spe ctalist, beat Ferdinand in voting by the National Furl Writers Assoca- tion. Ferdinand beat T heatrical 30-15 in the Daily Racing Form voting, but only 8-7 in the FRA balloting. A one-vote switch in the I RA balloting would have made Theatrical Horse ol the Year. Theatrical's margin over Ferdi nand in the NTWA voting was 21- 19. Alysheba finished third in the voting of all three groups. Java Gold, Manila, Groovy and Miesque also re ceived votes. Earlier this month, Ferdinand won the Eclipse Award as best hand icap horse of 1987. Theatrical was voted grass champion and Alysheba was selected as the top 3-year-old. T he Eclipse Awards will be given out at a dinner in New York F'eb. 5. Charlie Whittingham, F'erdi- nand's 74-year-old trainer, said he was “pleasantly surprised” but not “overly surprised” by the Horse of the Year honor. He said the decid ing factor was Ferdinand’s victory over Alysheba in the Nov. 21 Classic at Hollywood Park. Ferdinand, who won his final four starts of 1987 after losing his first six, is the second horse trained by Whittingham to win the Horse of the Year award.
