Fired worker:
Nuclear plant
may be unsafe

Weather Watch;
AUSTIN (AP) — The South
Texas Nuclear Project is an “acci
dent awaiting the time to happen,”
according to a Fired STNP supervi
sor who said Wednesday that safety
checks were not made on parts of
the plant built with inaccurate in
struments.
Lonnal Wilhelm told reporters
that his efforts to tell quality control
officials and federal regulators
about the problem were ignored.
He said a quality control official
told him, “Come up with some fancy
words and make this go away.”
But a spokesman for Houston
Lighting & Power Co., managing
partner of the project, said Wil
helm’s concerns were addressed and
no safety problems were found.
Wilhelm worked at the plant con
struction site from 1978 until he was
fired in 1984.
From February 1982 until August
1984 he was supervisor of the Mea
suring and Testing Equipment Cali
bration Laboratory, which tests in
struments used to check safety-
related items.
“We looked at the actual construc
tion and found no problems in the
areas he was concerned about,”
HL&P spokesman Graham Painter
said of Wilhelm’s allegations.
The company did find problems
in “routing” of reports and notices
concerning instruments that were
not properly calibrated when used.
“Some were not getting back to
where they were supposed to flow
back to,” Painter said, adding that
the problem has been correctea.

GALVESTON (AP) — Two re
cent pit bull terrier attacks, includ
ing one on an 83-year-old man who
later died, have prompted the mayor
to call for an ordinance banning the
breed from this island city.
“We’ve had two unusual attacks
here recently,” Galveston Mayor Jan
Coggeshall said. “We don’t have to
wait any longer. We need to do
something now.”
A postal worker was hospitalized
last Friday after being knocked
down and bitten twice by a pit bull
while she delivered mail. In Decem
ber, Johannes Wilkins, an 83-year-
old retired seaman, died from inju
ries he received when he was mauled
by two pit bulls Nov. 20.
“This used to be a pretty safe com
munity,” Coggeshall said. “Enough
is enough.”

The mayor’s proposal, which
would outlaw pit bulls and give their
owners 30 days to move them out
side city limits, will be discussed dur
ing the city council's
workshop session.
If other council membe-ed st< m
the proposal, the city atK^|
